a job is something you wake up and say, "man i gotta b at work in a 1/2 hour this sux"

a career is something where you wake up and say, "going in early to take care of some stuff..." cuz you enjoy doing what you do

its really all about happiness. when we grew up, we learned what makes us happy. Not surprisingly, for some people..its money. Because money paves the way to many material things, women, and superficial happiness.

I go to work because getting paid makes me happier than not getting paid. simple as that.

Well, It really depends... During the winter waking up and getting to class is a pain in the ass, waking up when it's 25 below 0 and you have to walk 4-5 blocks really makes you want to crawl right back into a warm bed.

In the summer my job duties change all the time, I guess going to work to see what I'll be doing that day motivates me. One day I could be working on our network and servicing workstations, the next day I would be running a bodcat all day, the day after that I'm in a truck driving to the canadian boarded to get a load of granite... job variety keeps me going

I  my job

I'd say not so much the desire to succeed as the fear of becoming insolvent...and moving in with my parents.

Motivation ? It's just downstairs. I don't think I can ever wake up and get ready to head to an office ever again.

Try being happy without money. The things I like to do cost money. For the most part I do enjoy what I do and it's not as bad as what I could be doing to make a little more and work farther away, so for me its a comfort thing. If I could not work and still do the things I want I probably wouldnt, but I'd also probably go insane too without stuff to do. Heck I've got about 5 weeks this summer, if I don't find something for that time I will most likely go a little crazy(alot of that may have to do with my divorce though).

I go to work so I can pay for my car which I need to buy so I could get to work so I could make money which I have beacuse I work.

Life would be happier if I would just live in the woods and kill my own food and build my house out of logs.

"I said who said anything about rich? I just want to be happy and comfortable."

this is the essence.

we work so we can live, we don't live so we can work.

i wake up everyday with little sleep to go to the job i do not like because it affords my family and i:

a nice roof over our head
a stomach full of healthy food
a closet full of clean clothes
a safe backyard for the girl to play in
the ability to travel to interesting places
the freedom to live happily

Are people just ignorant and never realize that money will never make them happy?
Yes I'd argue easily that most people are just ignorant of what makes them truly happy. Funnily enough a lot of people see happiness in material goods and then they indebt themselves grossly to accumulate these goods. Then, the goods don't make them as happy as they thought, but now they've got a large debt burden and although lots of money doesn't make one happy, owing lots invariably makes one unhappy.

We'll all die, and heaven or no, when we die we will take nothing materialistic with us. In a society as rich as ours (my theories are not so easily applicable when you're on the virge of starvation in Africa), once you hit the middle class or so, having more money has no meaningful effect on your overall happiness.

The reason I try to accumulate more is partly out of inherent human greed (and of course I do like the things I buy). But, while I live with that I know that money is not huge on the list of priorities for me. Once a person has enough for room and board and reasonable entertainment anything on top of that is often just a waste of that person's free time and mental health.

Saddest is when people seriously sacrifice their health and family life in the search of money that they don't need. To me a person who's health is down the sh*ter and their marriage is on the fritz, but they're quite rich, leads a disasterous life.

Anyway, what motivates me to get up in the morning is that I simply enjoy life, and so another day awake is another day to enjoy. Not that I always like getting up, and it's obviously easier to get up on the weekend than on a weekday, since I don't have work in front of me on a weekend For me health, family, prinicples etc. are far more important than money.

1) I spent much of last year (2003) unemployed and playing computer games at home. I now realize it sucks to be an unproductive member of society.

2) My job involves writing, editing, and distributing text books to over 12,000 social studies teachers in the US. My job is to teach teachers about modern Germany and the European Union. American children tend to know jack about the world, and I help change that.

3) I try to be an independent person, meaning no strings attached to parents. That requires $$$.

4) I like to be generous, buying stuff for friends and helping charitable organizations. That too requires $$$.

I work so that I can accumulate a large enough pile of cash that I can swim in it like Scrooge McDuck.

That and so that I can quit and not ever have to work again.

Jack sh!t really, but I mainly wake up because people will keep calling my phone until I do. Since that is annoying, I will typically wake up and eat and go to class or take an exam or something. Other than that... not much motivates me, because I hate about 99.9% of all people in the world.

1) My strong work ethic (thanks to my father).
2) My health condition requires a fair amount of maintenance. There is no feasible way I could afford the expense without a full time job that pays health insurance. I'm fortunate to have a job (at least until June) that covers 100% of mine and my wife's health insurance.
3) I like the things I have, and want to keep them. Rarely is it about acquiring more.
