Are people just ignorant and never realize that money will never make them happy?
Yes I'd argue easily that most people are just ignorant of what makes them truly happy. Funnily enough a lot of people see happiness in material goods and then they indebt themselves grossly to accumulate these goods. Then, the goods don't make them as happy as they thought, but now they've got a large debt burden and although lots of money doesn't make one happy, owing lots invariably makes one unhappy.
We'll all die, and heaven or no, when we die we will take nothing materialistic with us. In a society as rich as ours (my theories are not so easily applicable when you're on the virge of starvation in Africa), once you hit the middle class or so, having more money has no meaningful effect on your overall happiness.
The reason I try to accumulate more is partly out of inherent human greed (and of course I do like the things I buy). But, while I live with that I know that money is not huge on the list of priorities for me. Once a person has enough for room and board and reasonable entertainment anything on top of that is often just a waste of that person's free time and mental health.
Saddest is when people seriously sacrifice their health and family life in the search of money that they don't need. To me a person who's health is down the sh*ter and their marriage is on the fritz, but they're quite rich, leads a disasterous life.
Anyway, what motivates me to get up in the morning is that I simply enjoy life, and so another day awake is another day to enjoy. Not that I always like getting up, and it's obviously easier to get up on the weekend than on a weekday, since I don't have work in front of me on a weekend For me health, family, prinicples etc. are far more important than money.
