I was mindlessly clicking buttons on bandcamp, and this came up. I thought "Holy shit, I've seen these guys!". Haven't seen them in ~10 years, but I think I'll buy the discography. I have a couple of their cds laying around somewhere, but I'm not sure I can put my hands on them.
In this ballad, Villon, knowing himself to be condemned, implores the pity of all, while still scratching the passage, the torturers and executioners who subjected him to the hard regime of bread, water and torture and, with them, Thibaud d'Aussigny, the severe and powerful bishop of Orleans, responsible for his imprisonment at Meung-sur-Loire and whom Villon made enter into posterity with him. And Villon cries out here from the depths of his jail, even if this poetry seems to be declaimed in the street, to the attention of all the people who live there and whom the poet knows so well. In the second volume of his excellent work on the life of the medieval poet "François Villon, his life and his time", Pierre Champion will even see, for his part, a certain reference to the criers who announced the names of the dead.
