Well the numbers were in and there were more than enough votes to stop the shutdown.

Surely you're not asking me to point out a Congresscritter I actually like. LOL

Personally I'd select Paul Ryan. He's universally known as THE budget wonk in the House, and being from Wisconsin is not in an especially politically safe district (as political districts go) so he cannot take a hardline party position without being able to justify his actions. And he has Presidential aspirations (maybe even in 2016) and a real shot. Stick him in as Speaker and tell him this is your shot to sink or swim.

Wanna be President?
1. Get both parties back to the table.
2. Get the government running again.
3. Get government funded for at least long enough to get appropriations bills passed. One Continuing Resolution to end the Continuing Resolutions.
4. Get an actual budget passed that addresses our short-term as well as long term problems.
5. Get appropriations bills in line with that budget passed to at least start getting our fiscal house in order.

I could go along with that. Though I think Ryan shot his chance at the presidency full of holes in 2012, but that is another discussion.

The real issue is that doing that would effectively fracture the Republican party in the house, they would have the majority in name only. It really comes down to putting country over party and I'm not sure they can pull it off.

when do democrats put country in front of party?

Obama himself voted against a debt ceiling increasing, saying the fact they needed that vote was a failure of leadership.

Little did he know that he was predicating the failure of his own leadership.

Why is reid asking for a 'clean' ie republicans surrender to our demands bill, that extends the debt limit till the end of 2014? Its not about country, its because he doesn't want to deal with the issue when there are elections.

It has been explained to you numerous times by other people, I am not going to bother repeating it. It isn't my fault you are too stupid to understand what is being told to you. Now go troll somewhere else, kid.
Your idiocy isn't wanted or needed here.

BTW you should go find Incorruptible, you two could take a remedial English class together!

So nobody has mentioned Bohner's passing of the debt ceiling for 6 weeks if Obama negotiates on a budget? Nobody has any opinion on that?

Wall Street Journal piece

House Republicans on Thursday will offer the White House a six-week extension of the nation's borrowing limit in exchange for wide-ranging negotiations on spending, in a potential major breakthrough in the deadlock that resulted in a partial government shutdown and threatens the country's ability to borrow.
In a possible wrinkle, the GOP plan would permanently ban the Treasury Department from using extraordinary measures to avoid default, congressional aides said.

This delays default for another 6 weeks. Opinons? Thoughts?

IMO, 6 weeks is far too short, we're just playing musical chairs, creating a constant crisis for no reason.
I wouldn't mind it if Obama came back with a delay of defaulting for a year. After negotiations it turns into ~6 months. In 6 months the default will be an albatross against the Republicans necks during election season. I bet if they try to default they'll lose their Virginia seats, and any seats in which a moderate stands a chance of winning. The Tea party is in firmly red territory, but but there are many moderate Republicans that aren't. Of course, losing the moderate Republicans means the Republicans become even more extreme then they are now.

Yeah, fat chance in hell Obama will negotiate on anything. The closest they'll get is him and Boehner having hall sex.

100% serious, I would not trust anything that Obama said.

The government ALREADY has unlimited spending power. What I'm trying to avoid is Financial Armageddon. The constitution already gives Congresses the power of the purse, I'm trying to do the responsible thing and make certain congress pays its bills.

Looks like there's the beginning of a shutdown and debt ceiling deal!

Huff post's live-blog

Yeah, yeah, I know. Librul media, but it's the best source I could find at the moment. If anyone has better sources I do hope you post them.

Looks like as of right now (5:29pm) that the deal is as follows.

There will be a clean CR until January 15.
House and Senate will finally do the budget conference they've wanted to for the past few months until Dec 15.
Debt Ceiling will be raised until the 15.
Medical tax being repelled will be looked at in the budget conference.

If this is truly the compromise that ends the shutdown then I'm extraordinarily happy! Will Boehner let it get to a vote?

He'll have to ask Ted Cruz for permission. But I think they both read the papers, and whatever right wing talk radio spews the voters blame them. They're politicians in the end, and politicians will always lean whichever way the wind blows.

What kind of politician wants to be the guy who cuts off grandpa's VA disability check?

So Republicans threw a temper tantrum over defunding Obamacare by shutting down the gov't, and will now 2 weeks later get literally next to zero Obamacare-related concessions. Any fiscal conservative here want to defend this waste of time and tax dollars?

I think Boehner is going to have to allow an up-down vote on whatever the Senate comes up with, even though it will probably have none of the Obamacare changes that the House originally wanted. To block a negotiated Senate Dem/Repub compromise with time running out would be political suicide.

They've been begging for it, like a naughty small child who craves attention, any attention. They'll do nearly any silly thing that comes to mind to get it, too, like lighting the house on fire.

I am not a fan of Obamacare myself, but I don't think Ted Cruz and the like should get their way. This madness is reckless political action to the extreme. I hope those districts elect more moderate republicans next time. They only look like bafoons right now.
