Do this in this order:

1. Get a job.
2. Don't screw it up and get a promotion.
3. Get a girl.
4. Get married.
5. Get a house.
6. Insert your penis into the woman's vagina and make a child (preferably the same woman from step #3).
7. Repeat if desired.
8. Grow old.
9. Retire.
10. Die.

Life's little instruction book.

for those that asked: I have a bachelor's in psychology which is WORTHLESS. and about 70,000 in college debt. By the time that's paid off I'll be in my late 40s. As for people saying there's steps in life the only quote that comes to mind: "nine to five, office, pool / Couldn't live that life, I needa loft and pool" and yet I'm broke. I'm toast.

Well least you have a degree, better than no degree and being in debt.

In all honesty, have you been putting forth a real effort in finding a job? What have your previous jobs before this been like?

Either get a job or be a fucking loser for the rest of your life... Get your Masters or whatever the fuck you were going to get originally AFTER you get a job. (I do hope you didn't plan on just a bachelor's) You need to pay off this debt and stop wasting money.

Uh, you went to school so why not get a job with those skills. You don't need a degree (if you didn't get one) just to get a job. Stop boozing & feeling sorry for yourself; truth is it's time to grow up or accept that your facing being a looser.

Basically you have to find the positive in yourself and your life and do whatever it takes to get ahead by setting small goals and getting off your ass and doing something about it. Even if it's bagging groceries. But I'd imagine if you went to school degree or not you can use the things you learned & make a resume with those skills and get a job. Thats a step.

I kinda fucked around until that age. I had an almost-as-worthless degree (MIS) and got stuck doing programming. Once I decided sitting in a cubicle with virtually no human contact was not a good career choice for me I did something about it.

Trust me, if I could turn my life around anyone can.

You can't bitch about not having enough money when you blow it all on gin. Get your priorities straight. Life isn't shitting all over you, you're just not doing anything to make it better. Don't give up or your life will never get better. Things don't fall into your lap, you have to get off your ass and do it.

But I don't know what to do with the rest of my life. THere's nothing left for me. I know I know...do shit you like and meet people that way...but the thing is...no one my age does the shit I do. THey all have careers and are driven and attract like minded people.

I was always afraid of ending up like those 28 or 29 year old people with no job or career and sitting around drinking and still 'partying' and being 5 years older than everyone at the parties they go to. Guess what I am now? I had so much potential. I was taking junior level college courses by the time I was 17, and now 10 years later I've actually become what i never wanted to be. Now apparently my student loans are going to come due soon and I have no money. I'm not sure I see many ways out of this. I don't have a way to earn enough money to cover loans and basic living expenses. I was doing well with stocks and then the market crashed and I lost 95% of my money. I started with a few hundred bucks and worked my waaaaay up. I was thinking about buying my mom a car, and even a house down the road. Now it's all gone, I have no career, no way to get one, no way to afford any grad school I'd have to pay for, no woman, no friends left really. Anyway, gin was on sale again so i bought a couple liters for 12 bucks and I'm drinkin it tonight so I thought I'd post here because I have no one else to talk to.

If you really did have the type of drive, stamina, and knowledge to grow a minor fortune up from $100, I see no reason why you should look on the rest of your life as a complete failure.

If all of this is true, I'm sure you're one of those people that just needs to reinvent yourself. Challenge yourself to get a new degree (hey, at least your loan payments get deferred for as long as you are a student; think about it), a new direction in life. Grad school. Seriously, there are plenty of really nice Graduate programs that will take someone with a BS/BA in Psych--all types of disciplines.

Of course, to get serious about grad school you'd have to tone down the party life.

I just re-read this and noticed that he has a degree in Phsychology - Uh WTF why is someone with that degree talking like such an idiot? You can make decent money in that field if you'd get your head out of your ass.

I'm 26. You can't find a party with people your own age? I know that whole teenage raving scene is gone (for both of us) but there are plenty of cool club nights for slightly older people.

And besides, do you really still want to sleep in a pile of wasted people on a floor, not knowing where you're gonna get food/accommodation the next week? Being a bit older and behaving like it can be good.

Where in New Zealand?

It's a good place to go broke if you're going anywhere broke - you'll find labouring work easily and you can sleep on the beach in the summer if you've got nothing else.

I would stop the partying and the drinking. Cut up your credit cards. Do your own personal SWAT analysis.

Write a resume, brush up your interviewing skills, and start applying to all sorts of jobs, ones you would like and not like. The point is to get an income stream.

Learn to save. Learn to budget. Try to live such that you are keeping your head above water and can pay off that debt. And this might require moving into the shallow end of the pool. In other words, if you have to sell/downgrade your car to afford less (or no) payments, do that. Can you use public transport? Do you have/need a fancy cellphone/plan? What about cable TV? Eating out all the time? Gym membership? What monthly expenses can you do away with? Move into a smaller apartment? Move home? Get a roommate to share the rent? Cut coupons? Sell any fancy gizmos you don't really need?

Start paying off that debt, treading water, and then eventually start saving/investing again. Once you get control of things, start looking for better jobs, etc.

I too fear the societal push to get married, have kids, and have a mortgage by 30. But guess what? You can still earn an honest living, be debt free, 30, unmarried, no kids, no mortgage, and still have lots of fun in life.

I am afraid it is time to grow up and get responsible. But that does not mean the fun stops forever. Fun just takes on a new definition.

Funny thing happened to me when I was about 22 or 23. I was smoking cigs, drinking like a fish, blowing money on partying every weekend, etc.

I was struggling with trying to give up the cigs and cut back on the drinking and was discussing this with a friend of mine. As cheesy as it sounds he said "only you can make yourself change" I don't know what it was about the way that he said it but man did that play over and over and over in my head. I quit cold turkey smoking, drinking (well gave up drinking totally for about a year and now only have a beer once every few weeks with a meal) and set my life on a better path.

Here it is 5 years later, I'm happily married, own a home and have a job that pays well and that I really enjoy.

Moral of the story, you only have to answer to yourself in the end.

agreed

your not a kid anymore, and no one is going to pity you

get your a$$ up and make something of yourself

Heh, my little brother is soon to graduate and go to college, and psychology is one of the majors he's thinking about.

This whole "everyone needs a degree!" thing has got to go.

Im 29 and realized the same thing when I got out of the Navy at 27.

There about a hundred self-help books on this topic over at Barnes & Noble.
Or dont spend a dime and go to your public library.
One of them (the book I am reading now) is actually called "What should I do with my life" by Po Bronson.

Also, I assume you are a GenX like me and grew up with parents who had unrealistic expectations about your potential.

A book I just got from the library is "The Self Esteem Trap: Raising confident and compassionate kids in an age of self-importance". MOST of the book actually looks at parents of the 80's and 90's and what they did wrong. Its a good read for people in our age group and tells us how to deal with the world in a realistic manner, even after our parents told all of us we could be president. It deals a LOT with depression that comes from lack of success.
Sounds to me like you might really need it.
