Minecraft. 100% on a C2D laptop. 50-70% on a C2E X9000 laptop.

Arma 2 (a very heavy CPU game) uses between 12 and 20% of a 3930k. Which is between 1.4 and 2.4 cores on average.

I haven't seen a single game go above 24% so far in testing my 7970's, although clearly I need to see what Minecraft thinks of it! So the limit for most of them has been about 3 cores, which is what I would guess the mode is as well.

Probably would not affect a Core i7 3930K and HD7970 but I'd like to see that happen in maximum graphic details and detonate 500 TNTs at the same time and maintains no less than 30 FPS during the explosion.

It depends on the game, and whether it is bottlenecked by the GPU or CPU.

This is why many CPU reviews benchmark at very low resolutions, so that the GPU doesn't become a bottleneck when they're trying to review the CPU.


Most games use 2~4 threads, but in my experience I've really only seen two cores (which in my case would be 33%) used.

My 2400 uses 40-80% CPU in Start Wars Old Republic. That's a total of four cores being used.

Depends entirely on the game and what processor you have. Different games are coded to use a different number of cores, than 2 processors with a different number of cores will have a different % of the processor used by the same game.

My Core i7 960 at 3.8 has about 60% usage when playing BFBC2 at 1920*1200 resolution.

I think most games stress my x4 620 at about 80% at stock speed and less when overclocked. It's my GPU usually gets pass 80%.

OP: My CPU is pegged at 100% all the time with DC projects. Your blanket question has so many variables that it seems impossible to answer accurately, but on a limb: no, most games do not use 100% of the CPU.

If it does your cpu is over working due to a bottleneck, malware, bad drivers etc etc.

I'm still using a dual core CPU and have not run into any serious problems with game performance. But I have seen my CPU usage hit 100% in some games. Skyrim, L.A. Noire, Battlefield Bad Company 2 etc...

With your 2500k at 4.5 GHz, there aren't many games that will run that CPU at 100%. Most of them that will are poorly optimized console ports or games that are made to be CPU-centric (strategy or large number of unit games like Starcraft II, for example)

Depends on game, then depends on what CPU and clock speed the CPU is running at and also how many GPUs you are running in your rig.

F1 2010, Starcraft 2, WoW and BF3 are some of the most demanding games I've played in terms of CPU demands.

It really depends on the game. I've heard Napoleon Total War could max out a 980x but i have not played that game yet, nor do i have a 980x or sandy bridge e CPU.

I'm getting 85%-90% constantly on BF3 with my 2500K @ 4.5GHz.
