Hey yall, I just put together a Duron 800/128/15GB/FIC AZ11/SBLive/Visiontek MX/Linksys NIC. Pretty basic computer. I am going to be using it for my home business, but also as a home computer too. I will be using it for Audio (Like Acid), Games (CSTrike, UT, Q3, etc....), maybe some DV editing, and anything else that a home computer does. I have Win98SE installed on there right now. But I have been thinking about maybe somthing else. Out of WinME, WinXP (Even tho it is Beta, my buddy is a tester and he said I could try it out), and Win2000 (I will have to buy that, but that is not a problemo). Should I stick with 98SE or do somthing else?

Yeh that is what I have heard. But ok between 98se and Win2k which one? Win2k is not the cheapest thing out there, so it would have to be worth the moola

Hi Y'all,
Well most of the time I would agree with the Win2K vote, but I think you should use 98SE. If this is your only PC and you enjoy graphical games like Q3 and UT, why not stick with 98. I also see that you have only 128mb of ram. If this is good ram, then no problem. But, if your ram is generic then you may see performance slowing down. My honest suggestion is run 98Lite 98lite.net and then dual boot with win2K. I run this setup on my gaming rig and I love it. Win2K works great for when I'm working, and 98Lite is great for gaming. Some people don't enjoy rebooting in order to play games, but I like it for two reasons:
1. It keeps me from jumping on games when I should be working
2. You can separate everything onto two partitions for easier management
Yes, you could put things on different partitions anyway, but if your partitions are exclusive to each OS, then adding a game won't affect the business partition registry and vice versa. Just my $.02 + some. Hope I was of help.
As Always,
D

If you have Windows 98SE, and are happy with it, by all means use that. There's no sense upgrading from that to Windows ME, however. But if you want to spend the extra, go with a dual-boot between Windows 98 and 2000. I personally use only Windows 2000, but since you play a lot of games, you will probably want to use them in Windows 98, so a dual-boot setup would be nice for you.

I think anything before ME is a joke. I have all kinds of trouble with W98 and never one with ME or W2K.

I would absolutly recomend win2k. It is by far more stable, and just generally nicer to deal with. If I were you the only reason I would be leary of installing 2k would be video drivers, however since you have an nvidia based card that shouldn't be a problem, since right now they are the only ones who have win2k drivers as fast as their win9x drivers. Otherwise everything you want to do is supported under 2k and its just soooo much better. Good luck.

Hi Y'all,
I agree with everyone that win2K is a superior OS to win98 on many levels, however I believe 98 has some benefits that win2K does not. I believe 98 is more of a toy/gaming os now. There are so many different tweaking programs out there that just running win98 can be a game. Also, geforce based video cards can take advantage of S3TC in UT. Yes, it is minor but it's still something to "play" with. I stick with my previous recomendation. Dual boot with Win2K and 98 and I strongly suggest getting 98lite, it has worked well for me. 98 still has its benefits if you look at it the right way.
As Always,

If you're going to work with file sizes over 4gb(editing video/audio files) Win2k and a NTFS partition is your only real choice.
