Am I allowed to spend $1500 now and pocket the $3500 for later upgrades?

If I had $5000 grand to spend, I'd wait for Socket 2011. Or Bulldozer, but $5k for an AMD build has been unheard of for a while.

You name it, it will probably be done on the PC. So just a everyday PC that needs to be gaming oriented.

Well at that price point we are talking a dual Xeon hex core build. 32GB ECC RAM, probably going to have to get an E-ATX case or a rack. I will post a build up later once i have priced it out on newegg. For now i need to sleep i just finished dragon age 2 and haven't slept in about 32 hours so im exhausted.

Dual Xeon six core ? Now see....that is something I didn't even consider. While it would be nice, I don't think id need 32 gig of ram. What could possibly use that much ram ? I was thinking along the lines of 12 to 16 gig.

A Dell R710 running ESX for a few virtual machines over fibre. Then I'd run apps that made me money.

There isn't a real 5k gaming market. Just a silly way to waste money.
After about 2k the money is better used buying a really comfortable chair or a nice desk set up.

This is a moving target but... here is a quick list with rough pricing pulled from my ass that puts it within spitting distance of $5k.

_________ Cpu
Core i7 2600K $330
I'm strictly a prosumer so no need for Xeons

_________ Motherboard
Asus P8P67 Deluxe or Sabertooth P67 $230

_________ Memory
Random 8GB DDR3-1600 kit at 1.5v or less $120

_________ Video Card
dual GTX 580 factory liquid cooled $1300

_________ Cooling
whatever random CPU block, pump, rad(s), etc $250

_________ Case
Lian Li PC-X900R $300

_________ Hard Drives
Samsung 2TB F4 for storage x2 $160
VelociRaptor 600GB $250

_________ SSD
Intel 510 250GB SSD $620

_________ Optical
random DVD writer $20

_________ Monitor
Some nice 30" $1300

_________ Keyboard
Something with mechanical keyswitches like the classic Steelseries $100

_________ Mouse
Logitech MX518 mouse $30

EDIT: DOH! Just went off the list and forgot the PSU. Ah well, what's another $200-300 for a Gold kW PSU?

This seems more in line of what I was kind of expecting. Would maybe go a bit higher than 8 gig of RAM though. Or would that matter. Like say from .....8 gig to 12 or 16 ?

But would 16 have any noticeable performance difference than say 8 ?

For most things no. And speed wont either CAS 7 vs CAS 9 1333Mhz vs 1800MHz you will only see a 1-4% gain (not worth the cost)

If you are looking for a gaming centered build honestly i cant see spending more then $2,500

And is there any more powerful cpu that would be better than a 2600K ? Even though of the budget, Id still hate to pay over or anywhere near a grand for a CPU. Could also use maybe a new set of speakers. I have Logitech Z5500's at this moment. They are great, but have been considering Klipsh as well.

Yes, gaming oriented. But Id like the absolute best for gaming. Of do you think I should hold a bit longer and see what Bulldozer does ?

But in the meantime, I could get everything else other than motherboard / cpu.

Note : I really dont want or need 3D. But I would like to try Eyefinity at some point. But would have to be 3 monitors. I wont use just two.

EDIT: It dont have to be "Eyefinity" ...I just mean multiple monitor.

I would advise waiting for BD BUT honestly it wont be a huge improvement for gaming. It looks like a six core BD will beat a quad core SB except games dont really even use 4 cores yet so for gaming SB would still win at the same clock speeds. If you want i can spec you out a gaming build based on sandy bridge that you could buy tonight if you want.
