$5k isn't just for the desktop right? Why isn't anyone considering a 5 or 6 monitor Eyefinity setup or something? Dual 6990s would be cool too.

I'd build a nice rig based around the i5-2500K with a top-of-the-line video card and at least one Dell 30" monitor...and pocket the rest for upgrades at a later date.

A Dell R710 running ESX for a few virtual machines over fibre. Then I'd run apps that made me money.

There isn't a real 5k gaming market. Just a silly way to waste money.
After about 2k the money is better used buying a really comfortable chair or a nice desk set up.

This seems more in line of what I was kind of expecting. Would maybe go a bit higher than 8 gig of RAM though. Or would that matter. Like say from .....8 gig to 12 or 16 ?

The problem with this line of reasoning is that an i7 2600K and GTX 580 SLI build is just so passe. I mean, anybody (even mike) could put it together in like 30 minutes tops. If you really want to show off what a unique snowflake you are, you need server grade hardware.

A 2600K plus GTX 580 SLI build is only something like 10% faster than a build costing 2/3rd as much. You really need to show them who's boss by spending $5000 on a build that's 20% faster than a $1500 one.

Then why don't you quote me a setup for $1500, and include a 30" monitor with it? Remember, ill need a OS as well.

get a $1,500 build add a 30" and OS and that's what he is talking about a total of around $2,500 (like i said earlier) more then that is sort of pointless.

You're a joke.

You're not gonna get 20% gains of performance on a PC for everyday computing and gaming by going from 1500$ to 5000$.

If I had that type of money to blow on a computer I wouldn't blow it all on a computer, I'd just get a nice 2560x1600 resolution 30" Dell IPS, a GTX 580, a nice 240GB SSD, 8GB RAM and a 2500k and call it a day.

Spending anymore would be nonsensical really..

Hmm...an idea. What if I were to split the $5 Grand into two parts. $2500 each. And build a Sandy Bridge rig, and a Bulldozer rig.

Think this would be possible ? If only the damn P67 Sabertooth would relaunch already.

I'm sure that's more than possible.

Pointless however unless you live with family/friends..

I would rather have 4 GTX 580's liquid cooled and 3 120hz monitors for 3D vision surround.

4 580's ?

Yes, I live with my family. My wife and kids.

That is what I think I am going to do. Build two identical computers. The only hardware that will be different is the motherboard and CPU. Intel + AMD.

Hmm...maybe ill put a GTX 590 in one. And a HD 6990 in the other.

two GTX 590's water cooled would be pretty sweet.

Or maybe ill build two identical Intel 2600K machines. Totally identical except for GPU. One 6990 and one GTX 590.

This im seriously considering now. Would be awesome for benching.

Yes but unless your wife or kids are hardcore gamers that is just what you will have two bench computers. You will only be using one at a time. the other will be wasted on facebook, youtube, and crappy internet porn. If you are a family of gamers however then maybe buying one machine per person and splitting it up evenly would make sense.

Well, I wouldn't say "family of gamers"...but my wife plays an occasional game now and then. And my son, turns 13 this month, and I can tell, he's gonna be a PC gamer. My daughter is turning 15 in July. Not much into gaming though.

But my brother visits A LOT. Rome Total War would be great through LAN. Or any other game for that matter.

Id need massive hard drive space in these builds. I have a back log "seriously, can show pics" of 122 games. And would like to intall them all. Damn, that would be hella updating.

My optical drives are gonna poon me.

that would give you 3 $1,600 computers, once you include OS and a monitor for each that is a top o'the line gaming rig.

Edit:

Enough with the poon!

I like the joke you snuck in about his son watching internet porn.

Anyways, OP honestly you shouldn't waste money on 3/2 builds.

If I was in your situation I'd just grab a 27" Dell U2771, a GTX 580 and a i5 2500k.

The rest of the money would go to my wife and kids; maybe you should ask your son if he wants a gaming rig and build him one in his room? Surprise your wife with a gift?

dont be selfish!

And is there any more powerful cpu that would be better than a 2600K ? Even though of the budget, Id still hate to pay over or anywhere near a grand for a CPU. Could also use maybe a new set of speakers. I have Logitech Z5500's at this moment. They are great, but have been considering Klipsh as well.

You can run 4 different versions of any game out on the 2600. You don't need a better CPU.

In fact you will never notice any improvement for years over a 2k system... except the advised large monitor which may actually give you a headache (your field of vision isn't meant to spread that far from normal desk seating range) and the upgraded keyboard/mouse combo).

The water cooling is pointless as the stuff runs cool. Nothing is really bringing anything to the table.

Seeing that kind of absurd waste is just disturbing.

Be aware that a 30" monitor is $1500 in and of itself, so you're going to be looking at about $3K total.

i5 2500K + Hyper 212+ $242
MSI P67A-GD65 $180 (OOS at the moment due to SNB supply situation, there will be plenty of boards at this price point to choose from)
G.Skill DDR3 1333 8GB $80
2x 6950 2GB $490 AR AP
Corsair Force 120GB $230
Samsung F3 1TB $65
DVD Burner $18
Antec TP-750 $100
HAF 922 $100 AR
Total: $1505 AR

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit $100
Dell U3011 $1500
