What password!?!?!

Somehow, I configured the network between the 98SE and the XP Pro using a Netgear Router RP614.

However, when the 98SE Pc can download files from the XP, the XP Pc can not get any files from the 98SE? Weird, huh

And also, when I try to find out if the XP pc can go online, it asks for "User Name" and "Password" in a dialog box. Also is says RP614 above, which is the Netgear Router.

I typed in my usual Username and all the damn passwords I know of, nothing works. What's the deal with XP Pro??

edit: You know what..at this moment, I am able to network both PC.

But the XP pc won't access the internet.

It asks for Username and Password and I try three time, failing miserably. Then it shows:

Warning

System Authentication Failed.
Please contact your system administrator for the correct information.

I pinged the XP pc with 192.168.0.1 through 192.168.0.3 and I receive all 4 without any loss.

Where exactly is the username/password request coming from? The OS, the ISP, the router, or what? Can you tell?

The reason I ask -- Many netgear routers have these parental control features to limit internet access. Maybe the router is configured to not give you access without a password.

I believe it is from the Router.

I typed in the Username and Password and a new page shows:

Your router documentation should have the default password documented someplace, try the vendor web site.

The default user name and password for the router are "admin" and "password" -- are you maybe typing in your xp user name and password instead? If it isn't that on your system and you don't know what it is, you can reset the router to factory defaults. You may want to do that anyway, just in case you've accidentally set something that is blocking you out. The rp614 manual is at the Netgear web site if you don't have it.

That's odd. I had the exact same problem.......only the machines were switched. My 98se machines couldn't download from XP, but XP would download from 98se just fine. I think I just gave in and installed XP on both.
