What percentage of your CD/MP3 collection has, at one point, been in regular rotation on national radio?

I just want to see how much of the music we actually listen to is all the "underground" stuff that we like to talk about. I'd say maybe 10% of my music has been on mainstream radio.

EDIT: If the music is off an album w/ a hit radio single, the entire album counts as radio material.

A majority of my stuff is full albums of which only one or two songs have actually been on the radio. I don't know exactly what percentage right now.

If you want to know by just artists then I'd say probably 85% +/- 5% have been on the radio. Probably not regular rotation, but atleast on the radio.

Ok, I guess we should go by album then, as most albums don't have more than two songs that make it to radio.

Maybe around 5%. Those 5% are older songs though.

edit: I just remembered that the local college station plays all underground music so I guess that means that alot more of my stuff has technically been on the radio, but just never on any mainstream stations.

Considering the amount I have, and the percentage of "hits" per album that actually play on the radio, I'm guessing about 5%.

i think you need to define what sort of radio as well... perhaps 5% percent of my collection has been on "commercial" radio but i'd assume a much higher percentage has seen at least limited airplay on non-commercial university or other radio...

Even counting singles as entire albums... my collection is still predominantly non-top40. That is unless you count blues, jazz, techno, and foreign top40 as "national radio." Then it becomes 90% national radio. If not... well, back down to 20%.

the vast majority, was on the radio. IMHO, underground music is called underground for a reason, most people have never heard it.

Probably around 5% for CDs/MP3s. And only one of my LPs has a hit song on it, so that's about 0.5% of my vinyl collection.

Claiming that "radio" music sucks and "underground" music rules is just another one of these "my-internet-p3n0s-is-bigger-than-yours" topics

when I first found out about mp3s, I used to download only songs I heard on the radio (and maybe one or two songs from the same artist that weren't being played), so in the begining, 90-95% were from radio.

Nowadays, I no longer listen to anything that is on the radio (except perhaps Tool and SOAD) and I no longer listen to the songs that I used to download before. I'd say that about 5% I of what I download these days can be heard on your average rock radio station.

But I could be an exception, since most of the stuff I download is from europe. I don't know about anyone else, but I can honestly tell you that the net has introduced me to music I never thought existed! Thousands of times better than radio.
