What platforms have been the most stable

What would people here say regarding the most stable platform has been running Vista 64? It is easy for something to look good on paper and then buy it and experience problems. I'm wondering what people's experiences are and what hardware combos have been very stable. I like running systems 24/7 and I'm sick of having to reboot due to crashes.

edit: I think I solved my XP box crashing problem... dirty vga heat sink fan. Has been fine since I cleaned it out. However, I still want to upgrade to vista.

If your hardware is stable Vista 64 will not crash. Unlike a lot of the crap floating around the internet, it's not a buggy POS since SP1.

Vista 64 with all updates here.

Using a good old Asus P5K-E mobo (Intel P35 chipset). 8 GB of Mushkin DDR2 (5-5-5-12-1000). eVGA 8800 GTX video card, yada yada.

I have NEVER EVER had one blue screen or crash. Only reason I ever have to reboot is when my stupid wireless n card dropped my connection and I try and try and have to reboot.

Dlink stopped supporting or simply does not support many of their wireless cards in Vista 64. By that I mean they dont post any drivers. I did find a few sites where they had some generic drivers which got my card finally working. However that was causing some issues. Finally under a fresh install of my Vista 64, the OS acutally recognized the wireless card (as its chipset type) and eveything has been golden since.

I really like Vista 64. For what I do it's perfect. However my XP box is also very stable.. again as others have said: get good hardware and proper drivers and honestly -- you can't go wrong.

That's a bold statement for a Microsoft product.

I agree here...I have had my vista system running 24/7 for a few months now, no lockups/reboots, nothing.

better then XP so far ^_^....and I was very hesitant on switching.

I've been running Vista Ultimate for a year and a half and still haven't had a bluescreen or serious issue.

I think you'll find that's true with any quality hardware. Any of the boards that would be recommended here, like the ASUS P5Q or Gigabyte EP45 families will be fine with Vista. Buy good quality RAM (which does not necessarily mean the RAM with the lowest timings) and you'll be good to go.

Ah, I forgot I don't have the link in my sig any more.

It has changed a little since I added it in 2006; more RAM, better graphics card and bigger hard drive, but I've never had any issues with it - I've been pretty lucky with having all relevant x64 digitally signed drivers fairly easily found.

My system is stable.
I shut it down as soon as I'm done using it, but I used to leave it running 24/7 when I wasn't paying for my own electricity
