All my parts are coming in on Monday 5/9. I am planning on using my Powmax 480W power supply temporarily, just until Fry's has another Antec 500W True Power for $50AR. But now I am reading a bit more and am wondering if my current power supply will even provide enough juice. (I will not be overclocking until I get a new PS.)

POWMAX 480W Specs:

System Specs:
A64 3200+ Winnie
Chaintech Ultra nForce4

2 X 512 DDR400
2 X 250GB SATA HDD

AOPEN DVD
Firewire Card
2 X 120mm case fans

Will my current power supply work?

The POWMAX's quite a bit starved on the 12V rail -- so yeah, I hope you get your Antec TruePower soon.

If you don't want to wait, the XClio 450watt at newegg for $53 is a very nice one.

With dual 12V rail, there are extra pins in the connection to the motherboard (24-pin vs 20-pin). The extra power is used by PCI-e videocards... I'm not sure exactly how the power is routed elsewhere.

There's a big thread at the top of GH about 24 pin PSUs if you want to read more about it.

the xclio is supposed to be made by channel well(antec, fortron, pcp&c) but it is so much cheaper. how can it be that cheap and be high quality? just wondering because I was going to get the xclio too.

I would like to know how $53 can buy a quality PS.

Also, is 15A enough for 2 HDD, 4X512 RAM, DVDRW, DVD-ROM?

An why 17A for the PCI-X? It seems like alot.

Other than having different brand name (eventhough they are manufactured by the same manufacturer), usually parts are cheaper for a reason -- most likely that they use different component grades inside the PSUs.

An example using a different component:

ASUS manufactures these NF4 mobos, the A8N-SLI premium and the A8N-E, but since they are actually specd differently, they have a different price tags.

Now we can actually see the difference between different mobos, but it's hard to tell the internal differences between different PSU until you open it up, at which point you'll void the warranty.

I just decided to go to Fry's last night and buy the Antec NeoPower 480W. I think I might just keep it for the 30 day return period while I look for something a little less expensive (The Antec was $120). Specs look really good.
