What programming language to study?

What programming language to study if you want to program linux operating system? and whats the best programming laguage to study and has more benefit vb?c? java? php? BTW i will just be studying on my own on free time.

You're going to study VB on Linux?

What are you trying to accomplish? You can learn a lot by just buying a book about C to learn the basics the just looking at kernel and other application's source code. If you are just going to dabble in programming, look at Python.

Another vote for Python. Again, it depends on what you want to accomplish.

For new programmers, Python and Ruby will probably be *kinder* than hard-core C or C++.

I have a little background on VB 6 and ASP (very significantly little).

If you want a good paying job, learn Java (or possibly .Net but that will be hard on Linux). If you just want to learn a new language that MAY (or may not) be the next best thing, learn Ruby. If you want to play around with web development but don't want to learn Java (and J2EE), learn PHP.
