What Programs Do You Run Regularly?

I built a gaming beast machine about 8 months ago. Lately my system, using Windows XP, is a little sluggish. With regards to speed, my computer is still blazing, but just not as fast as before. I understand that your computer gradually slows down over a period of time, and thats when I usually format. I end up formatting my computers about once every year. I'm trying to be proactive this time around and keep it running as efficient as possible for as long as possible.

I don't boot up that many things at all, just the basics. I have 35 processes running when I boot up as well, which I think is relatively low.

Just wondering what the computer gurus run regularly to keep their system in tip top shape?

Currently I run the CCleaner, but I don't do the registry. It lists a bunch of errors or fixes that it will or should fix. I don't know how safe it is to run that? Any thoughts?

Thanks all!

Its perfectly safe, i do that everyday . Also remove temp files, and remove unecessary items from startup .

CCleaner for the registry has never been a problem in my experience but it will ask you if you want to backup before it cleans and I always recommend you do so just in case, it only takes an extra moment and I just delete the backup in a week or so once I am sure all is ok.

This is really a misconception. I have XP based machine running on near 4 year old installs that are just as speedy as ever. It just has to do with not cluttering up your processes and registry.

This is exactly what I meant.

What programs should I run to keep clutter to a minimum.

Kinda an oxymoron.

Eventually if you run Vista on a new machine or end up using Windows 7 one day, you can be thankful that worrying about cleaning and tuning are a thing of the past.

In terms of keeping your XP box fast, there's not much you can do beyond what you're already doing. Keep an eye on services that sap resources: iTunes helpers, A/V, spyware clients, resident scanners, real-time monitoring, funky desktop gadgets, performance monitors, graphs, temp monitors, etc.
