so what's the point? Those keyboard covers feel like crap. It ruins the user experience.

I use the laptop near a window my dog sleeps on. I also keep water there, and the cover has prevented a bunch of accidental spills over the years.

I don't see the point of a skin - the bead blasted aluminum case of these computers is pretty resistant to dings and scratches. I hate those keyboard covers, though I can see how they work for some people who work around water. I used to have a GF who insisted on using one and all it did was leave marks on the screen and make the computer really annoying to type on.

The point is not to get the case all scuffed up. I sell my laptops every year. If I can help my resale value with a skin, I will do it. Always have always will. You might say the same thing with a cover on a smart phone same thing applies.

Zaggs are really good against everyday handling abrasion given the fragility of the Mac's finish, but with the number of times my Crapbooks go into the shop and have partial body replacements based on what the problem is, I find it a major hassle to have to peel off and try to get replacements or when I forget to peel it off and throw, what, $40? down the drain each time. I use Specks now. Heavier but actually bolsters the relatively weak chassis and also good against everyday handling.

Yeah, I just read your comment on your 3rd anniversary thread where you mention that after several years, your laptop still look brand new. Another member mentioned that his laptop look like crap and the case is weak. So what's the consensus on the aluminum unibody when measured against time and normal usage over the years?

I've had my late 2008 unibody MacBook Pro for over two years now. It has some minor scratches, but it still looks really good overall.

I'm not sure there is a consensus, but other than some scuffing on the bottom plate, my MBP still looks great after more than three years. I certainly don't see how anyone could say the case is weak with a straight face.

Entirely depends on how much you baby it. Lot of Mac users swaddle their gear and generally treat it like a glass slipper. As for caseless everyday use, it really depends on how much you carry it around. I'm in the halfway house as I have carried Macs around caseless and know how delicate they ultimately are in comparison to similar-class notebooks on the Windows side.

I use my computer for at least several hours a day, without a case, and in no way coddle it. I have admittedly only traveled with it about 30 times in its three years, and it usually stays at home, but my other computers have had similar usage patterns. Every Windows laptop I have ever had self-destructed within about two years, yet my MBP still looks near-new after more than three, other than some shininess on the keys and some scuffing on the bottom plate. The unibody Mac laptops are anything but delicate.

I use a ]Radtech Screensavrz. I think it used to be called a ratpadz or something. Anyway, it's a thin microfiber (think eyeglass cleaning cloth) sheet that I sandwich in my MBP when traveling. So if I pack my backpack too tight, the keytops never come into contact with my screen. The whole thing travels in one of those neoprene sleeves they sell at the Apple store. Besides this, it's a naked machine.

Admittedly, 90% of the time my MBP is sitting in its Hengedock, so it doesn't need too much protection to begin with.

I have this Speck case on my MPA and I also have this palm rest film on the area you rest your hands when you type since I wear a metal band watch and didn't want to scratch it to shit.

I've had a few light drops with the Speck case on and it saved me from getting any dents or scratches and the palm rest film is nearly unnoticeable.

I've never understood these kind of docks. Why not use the monitor on the Macbook for extra screen also?

Zagg is a waste of money. They are overpriced.

Get this. This is what I used for covering underside of my 2012 MBP. They run only 7 bucks per 12"x1' sheet. 12"x2' for $14 and so on.

I ordered a bunch of it so I can seal up my brand new F-Sport IS350.

I've never understood these kind of docks. Why not use the monitor on the Macbook for extra screen also?

1) Desk space, 2) logistics, and 3) disdain for multiple monitors of different resolutions.

If I were to use the MBP's display as a secondary display, I would need an elevated stand (so the display is at roughly the same level as my LCD. These kinds of stand take up a much bigger footprint than the ~8x5" my hengedock occupies.

I would also have to plug in power, ethernet, USB, any time I "dock". This is a major PITA. While the built-in keyboard and trackpad are sufficient, I just like having my MS Natural keyboard, MS 5-button mouse, speakers, desk, and office chair. It's how I'm used to working and I like it that way. I bought a hengedock specifically so I could "dock" my MBP. If I need to go somewhere, I pull my MBP, slide it in its sleeve, and bring it wherever. When I come back, I slide it back into the hengedock. So a stand would be a logistical time waster for me.

And I would rather not use a 15" 1440x900 alongside a 23" 1920x1080 LCD. I've used a multi-monitor setup before, and it doesn't do anything for my productivity. I'm better off with one big display than anything else. If money were no object, I'd probably do 3 displays on desk mounts. But I would still use the central display 90% of the time.

It seems alot of people that use the macbooks only have the macbooks as their main computer. It also seems that the people that say that the macbook does not scratch use their macbook as a desktop. I use my Macbook as a road warior

I use my MBP as my main computer, but virtually always on my lap and not on a desk. It travels a fair bit as well. Still looks great after 3 years . . .
