My friend has his a8n-sli and one 6600gt and will not be overclocking. He is intent on not spending over $50 on the PSU (I keep telling him he's insane). It does claim 20A on the +12V rail, so that is above the 17A minimum requirement....anyway...

Mad Dog is some sort of "own brand", which means you'd be mad to buy it unless you know who built it.

I disagree with that because i just bought a Mad Dog from compusa, the 500 watt with 30a on the 12v rail which is really good if it works which I can't test right now thanks to either my A8N-SLI being hosed or just really grouchy so I need to RMA that. i bought the Mad Dog cause I can return it and get all my money back for up to 21 days, no restocking fee or bs like that and cause its a single rail and I want to test that theory about the dual vs single 12v rail. But i am waiting a little while with the clear rtc jumper on to make sure that it is getting reset. Or else I'll have to rma the board and wait for a new board to test.

Mad Dog has a website that seems as good as any other psu maker, and the thing wasn't a cheapie either.

Are you saying that, an Allied 400w with only 12a on the 12v which worked for over a week until i installed the Enermax EG495P-VE (485w with 2 18a 12v rails), and the Mad Dog 500w with a 30a 12v rail ALL DON'T WORK???? You can't tell me that its the power supply on all three. The Enermax didn't work in my other computer so I did an rma through newegg on that cause it obviously didn't work. The Allied powers my old computer but suddenly not the A8N-SLI anymore, and the same result with the Mad Dog. My board worked fine until I put the Enermax in it. I'm not actually sure where all the problems are lying at, but most are in the board. I am thinking of buying a new one somewhere I can return it for no reason just to test out until I am able to RMA my board through Asus.

Why are you replacing your blue storm? I've read that it is a fine PS for this mobo. I've got one and I'm waiting on my ASUS mobo (which should arrive tomorrow). Should I be concerned. My setup looks similar to yours;
AMD64 3000+ winchester
1GB PC3200 Patriot RAM
1 6600GT Vid. Card
1 Floppy
2 Optical Drives

Thanks

So he went ahead and bought the PSU and I helped him put it together. The problem is that the system won't even go on....now before you start railing on me, I've put together a dozen systems or more and have never seen this problem. The motherboard light goes on (green), but nothing happens when you push the power button except that the power supply makes a very faint clicking sound only once. Defective PSU??? I've checked everything twice and can't figure out what is wrong with it...any suggestions?

Just to be clear, I wouldn't trust ANY SLI setup to less than 400 watts with at least 25A on the 12v rail, and I wouldn't feel comfortable until I got to around 450 watts.

It may be possible to get by with less, but it's also possible to hop to China on one leg...I wouldn't recommend it though...

I ordered my stuff and everything has arrived except the motherboard. I got the runaround trying to get an A8N SLI online but I think Monarch will finally deliver. A good American business with a good reputation. (and free shipping !! haahha!) For my PSU I got the OCZ ModStream 450 which pushes 26A on the +12, single rail. I will be putting dual BFG 6600GT OC PCI express video cards in it with the Asus A8N SLI Deluxe. Yeah Anand said it was stupid to buy 2 6600gt's because they won't add up to a single 6800 ULTRA!! But they did better than the GT for the games I play now so by the time I go to upgrade I will probably pay less for 2 6800 Ultra cards than I paid for these 2 6600-gt

Yeah I ordered the Modstream at Monarch late last night and they already shipped - what a price too! It even went down recently. They also already shipped my MB/CPU combo, pretty impressive!

People have told me otherwise, but I guess I'll find out. I really do like my blue storm, very quite. With what I have now my rails average around 11.84 - 11.776 idle and dips every now and then to 11.712 when I run a 3D game. I'm guessing this will get worse when I add more. <shrug>

A friend of mine needs a power supply and I was gonna give him the one that I didn't want of these 2. I wish I had about 12 hard drives and 2 x 6800 GTs to give these power supplys a run for thier money.

Hi everyone.
I have been since long ago following this forum and I have decided it was time to join and share my experiences with this board.
Related to this topic I have an enermax 485 coolergiant that provides me with 11.902-11.950v never less than 11.902. It has 20 pin conector but I've had no issue with this.

Anyone using an Antec NeoPower experiencing any problems? I sent mine in on an RMA because I thought it might be bad after a Seagate SATA crapped out. This happened before I even moved the PSU into new system w/A8N. It was runnin a MSI Neo2 Platinum. After installing the PSU into new setup with my ASUS board I experienced nothing but problems (this was runnin 1002 even). The system would boot but it was very weak and as soon as I put it under any load...reboot. I put the old PSU back in (a generic RaidMax 420) and the system runs great. The antec tech said that the PSU is fine and he's sending it back with a full test/voltage report.....I dunno, can't figure it out.

One comment... if your running one video card, posting what your PS is that runs one video card seems rather pointless on a thread on the power needs of a SLI board. Am I wrong? Seems most PS will work for that.

I'm running a PC&P 510 SLI, after trying and failing with a therm 480w My rig prolly needs a min of 23A on the 12v stock (no OC) so 18A was not cutting it. I have a 55-FX, two 6800GT's and 3 HD's 2 DVD.

I wonder on these "multi rail" 12v PS if the rail sending power to the dual video cards will be enough.

I thought that pretty much any psu will work for 1 video card, but I have experienced otherwise. Also, I'm not sure that my issue is my PSU, except that when the Neo goes in the system is crap, when the Neo comes out...well How can I even consider putting the second card it without it running stable with one?

Using the OCZ Modstream and it works like a champ! My whole rig went together without a hitch. I am really pleased with it.

Don't know about the 550 for SLI, but I do have a Taurus 400w. It's super quiet and has been a good PSU for me given it only runs an OC'd nforce2/mobile setup.

Only thing I think it's missing is PFC. The 12v line fluctuates a tad but not much. Under really heavy load I get 11.73, but most of the time I run 11.86. 5v runs at 4.97 regardless of load, 3.3 holds steady at 3.06 regardless of load. I'm pretty sure these are Fortron based as well.

As far as the dual rail PSU's go, I think the one thing to consider is what the extra 4 pins in the 24-pin connector are for. They're for powering the PCI-E bus. If you've got 2 cards that run on external powered plugs (i.e. not running directly from the bus itself) I don't think you'll see a problem. I believe the PCI-E bus is set to power 75 watts through the extra 4 pins. So basically if you have a GT or Ultra card, it's going to draw power from a seperate rail than the 24-pin connector. If this is correct, then it looks like the 6600GT's would be the only cards posing a problem since most of them if any exception at all, are powered by the PCI-E bus. I'm sure if one could find out the amp draw from a 6600GT you'd be able to find out if this poses a problem for you. Otherwise your CPU and board will be powered independently on a different rail from your vidcards. This would also explain why the extra 4 pins aren't completely necessary for those that get by with the 20-pin connector.

I could be wrong here, but this is how I understand it to work based on what I've read and user experience.

Considering these people bought a special motherboard to do SLI would lead me to believe that they eventually intend to use two video cards. So if a rail sags on only one video card, it starts to worry people who most certainly have plans for two. I agree that having two video cards would bring more experiences to the posts but I don?t think posting voltage sag information is a bad contribution either.

Good to hear! If Fedex were being nice, I'd find out tonight but it looks like it will be tomorrow for me.

Your remarks seem quite logical. I thought about this myself regarding the issue of my NeoPower not juicing up my system enough. There is one thing though, I tried using the EZplug even with only one card installed in hope that it could use the 2nd rail to supply the card with power. I didn't work and I had the same result as without....a system that runs as if there isn't enough power and under load reboots. What are you thoughts on this?

clifak...

Just built my system this past weekend..
A8n-sli dlx w/1002 bios
3200 Winny
1GB Memory - Corsair twinx1024 4400C25
1x MSI 6600GT
1 Sata 160GB (Seagate barracuda )
Lite on dual layer DVD rw

I am using the NeoPower as well... with no issues as of yet.. I am not using the EZplug..

I haven't had the system up long enough to try any overclocking yet... I did a quick run using 3dmark01 and 05 .. with no problems... haven't tried any prime95 torture test yet either...

Thanks mlc...good to know. My PSU comes back in on wednesday so I guess I'll find out whether or not I'll need to buy a tough single rail PS. I understand why people are having issues with the dual rail, but doesn't it seem ridiculous that PSUs like the Neopower are aimed at gamers yet don't provide. I've always been happy with antec in the past, it's just this dual rail that got me.

Good luck with your system.
