How future proof is this PSU?

I plan on adding a quadcore and an 8800 GTS 640 MB or the next generation of video cards when they come out.

Would this PSU be usuable in 1-2 years time?

For now, I plan on taking my current rig and adding the Corsair HX520 and a x1950XT and then upgrade in 1-2 years with the above mentioned hardware.

X-FI sound card (the one in my sig)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I plan on upgrading the video card to an 8800 GTS 640MB/GTX or the next gen card (9800 GTX?) some time in the near future.

I was considering the Corsair 520HX, but I also noticed that this PSU has been out for a while. I'm assuming another bad boy is out there that I don't know yet. What would be a good PSU?

And how's the build look?

The small difference in price makes the 620 very appealing to me...I'm in the process of ordering one as we speak.

The 620 would be more "future proof" right?

Or is it only good to get it if you need it right NOW.

Future-proof is pretty misleading, since we really don't know what the manufacturers will come up with next month, next year, or in 2-3 years, BUT, as long as technology continues to use the same connectors (and/or adapters) this PSU SHOULD serve you for a couple of years...BUT, adding to the uncertainty of how "future-proof" it is, will be what YOU do to/with your PC. Obviously, if you load it up with lots of high-wattage demanding appliances/equipment, it may not have enough "oomph" for you, but it's pretty decent...especially for the price. (order one soon...the $30 rebate expires today)

I want to do more research before I hit buy.

It's not imperative that I buy my stuff now. BTW, I hate rebates.

I had a 450W with an old AMD 64 and a 6800GT.

You should not forget that, since 1 or 2 years, the computer parts are faster AND consume less. It wasnt true 4-5 years ago but now the cpu and graphic cards company know that this is an important aspect of their product.

Look at 7800 serie vs 7900 or Pentium D vs Core 2 Duo

It's not just total power.

The configuration of the PSU has changed totally. A 750 watt PSU 3 years ago would be worthless today because of the change of demands on the 12v. That 750 watt PSU 3 years ago would come with only 20 amps on the 12v. Today you need at least 30a.
