What qualifies as B-die memory? I have Samsung memory that boots 14-16-16 @ 3200mhz

I have some Team Dark Pro memory that is Samsung. It posts just fine with 14-16-16 3200mhz timings with 1.4v. Will only B-die post with Cas 14 @ 3200mhz? I tried to boot 14-14-14 but it was a no go. What voltage does it take and what timings do I need? These memory sticks are probably close to 2 years old.

The way I've heard it, is that B-die are Samsungs 8Gb DDR4 ICs. K4A8G085WB is one P/N I've heard used.

Supposedly, Samsung has stopped making it in favor of higher capacity M-die, so what B-die is left in the channel is it. That said, B-die seems to have been all the rage in the Zen/Zen+ days due to the IMC being fickle, and the improve IMC in the Ryzen 3000s tolerates a wider variety of speeds and ICs. Once all of the parts I ordered for my 3900X build get here, I guess I'll find out if Corsair LPX 3200 CL16 was a good idea or not.

I was under the impression any Samsung memory that boots with a 14-14-14 is B-die @ 3200mhz. My sticks on my Ryzen test build are 4GB modules. I think I can get it to boot @ 14-15-15. I was just curious about the amount of juice it would take to run. The heatsinks on the ram are the thickest I have ever seen on a DRAM module.

Heh. Sorry about that! I'm too used to needing to explain things to students in nauseating detail, and can't assume their level of tech knowledge.

Back in 2017, I saw all sorts of claims that "B-die was anything rated for 3200 and up" , which may've been true then, but I don't recall ever seeing anything to indicate that Samsung B-die were used for 3200 14-14-14-34, while Hynix 8Gb ICs were used for 3200 16-18-18-36. The few I felt were credible, were the ones that said it was just any 8Gb ICs from Samsung that had certain P/Ns.

Stuff like that was one reason I held off on upgrading my 2600K-based desktop to one built around a 2700X. Now that it seems like the IMC is better, I rolled the dice and grabbed a 3900X.

With the newer memory sticks. Other memory makers can achieve higher clocks eg. 3600mhz and usually the Cas latency is 16 or 17. I think the B-die @ 3600mhz is either 15 or 16. I was under the impression that only Samsung memory could achieve 14 for Cas latency. The other two numbers are not as important as the 1st 14. After reading several threads. A lot of people with Samsung memory are running 1.45v and close to 1.5v to achieve 14-14-14 or 14-15-15. Once you get to 3600mhz 16 seems to be the Samsung number for Cas latency.

I just got my 1st ever Ryzen rig up and running late last night and haven't had a chance to play around with it much yet.

I bought the G.Skill 3200 CL14 kit which is b-die. I'm in the memory tweaking phase and it's currently running at 3600 14-14-14-28 CR1 according to AIda64 @1.45v's.

I didn't dive into the memory settings any further than the basic options yet. I haven't done any hardcore memory testing yet to make sure it's gonna be 100% stable at these settings.

Anything higher than 3600 triggers that dang memory divider and kills the latency!

It is easy to check in Thaiphoon, start it, read SPD of slot with Your memory and it gives the following:

This is for B-DIE DRAM.

That is some damn good memory controller there, kudos AMD. Flat 14 and CR1 3600 used to be Intel's land, not anymore it seems Needs secondaries tuning to improve bandwith and latency.

What's the cpu fan speed? Single fan?

Isn't it only rated for 130 watt?

I ignore rated TDP on what I'm trying to cool and look for highest rated in my price point.

I think what I went with is rated at 210 watts. Overhead allows one to keep the fan speeds lower. Also helps prevent heat soaking of the cooler.

I dialed secondary timings in now. Usually it's 66.2ns-66.4ns in Aida64 testing. Varies depending on what's running. Best run I've seen was 65.7ns but didn't screen capture it.

I have seen CL14 from chips other than b die but not out of factory.

Those are really well tuned latency.
