What RAM should I get?

Greetings,

Currently I have two 2GB sticks of DDR2 OCZ Platnium 6400. My system wouldn't post so I took one of the sticks out and it posted.

So perhaps the RAM is bad. Is OCZ a bad choice? What RAM is most compatible with the P5Q Deluxe? My goal is to have 4GB of RAM.

Thanks.

Use the stick that allows the system to post, enter the BIOS and manyally set the memory voltage to 2.0v. Adjust the timings to something lax like 5-5-5-15 or 6-6-6-18. Reboot, add in the "bad" stick and see if it will post. If not, you may need to RMA them. If it does at least post, you may want to run memtest.

Hy sorry if this sounds repetitive but I dont understand this memory thing, I am buying an E8400 with a Pq5-C, this mother supports DDR3. I have read the sticky and if I read well the DDR3 doesnt do anything. I wont be doing any OC. So my question is what memory should I get? DDR2 800, isnt DDR2 667 the best thing if I dont OC because the CPU has this numbers 1333/4 = 333 and that would mean what??? I dont understand the numbers issue ...

DDR, DDR2 & DDR3 aren't interchangeable.

Your specific Asus MB has both DDR2 & DDR3 slots. I'd get DDR2 based on price/performance ratio.
PC2-6400 (DDR2 800) @ 1:1 would allow for your CPU FSB to be run at 1600MHz.

Hy Blain, what do you mean 1:1? The cpu has a FSB at 1333, the mother can do 1333 or 1600 for OC, i dont understand ..

The type of RAM you can use is all listed in the specs:

2 x DIMM, Max. 8 GB, DDR3 1333/1066/800 Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory
4 x DIMM, max. 16GB, DDR2 1066 / 800 / 667 MHz, Non-ECC, Un-buffered memory
Dual channel memory architecture
When installing total memory of 4GB capacity or more, Windows® 32-bit operation system may only recognize less than 3GB. Hence, a total installed memory of less than 3GB is recommended
*DDR2 1066MHz DIMMs work only on the black slots for one DIMM per channel. Ensure to install the DDR2 1066MHz DIMMs ONLY on the BLACK slots!
**Refer to www.asus.com or this user manual for the Memory QVL(Qualified Vendors Lists).

So basically, as you are not overclocking, i'd suggest some DDR2-800.

Or the G.Skill Blain mentioned.

No need to spend a lot when you do not overclock.

Go with G.Skill that were mentioned earlier in the thread as I have heard nothing but good things about them.

I would avoid Crucial like the plague. I have had to RMA my Crucial Ballistix Tracer 3 times within the past 2 years. Their quality has gone down hill lately.

Ditto. There was a time when OCZ had supremacy for DDR1. Then all of us hot-dawgs were looking at those DDR2 Crucial Micron D9 parts and the Crucial modules or kits, but the longevity of the Crucials, even when set within the voltage spec, caused us to rebel -- despite the "lifetime warranty."

G.SKILL seems to be at the top of the mountain for DDR2 these days. I think they are filled with wonderfulness -- if you pick the right modules.

Corsair has also been good for DDR2. INstead of a voltage-range spec, they cite a "recommended voltage," and give you a warranty-leeway of 5% above that. So if the recommended value is 2.1, you're warranty-safe up to 2.2V.

Ultimately, though, for any particular motherboard, I follow two paths of research: I check the motherboard-maker's web site for memory compatibility, and more important -- I check the various RAM-maker's web-site for motherboard compatibility. Some of the RAM-makers like Corsair feature a "memory configurator" link that lists most available motherboards.
