What resolution do you use?

I was reading a thread over at the Futuremark forums and some guy mentioned that he plays games at "1920X1200 with 16XAF/6XAA". I thought to myself, " :Q ". So, I gave it a shot. I tried UT2k4 maxed out at 1920x1200 with 4x AA and 16x AF. It ran, and I'm guessing at an average of about 10-15fps...certainly not enjoyable, but I had no trouble moving around. It looked very, very sharp.

Next, I tried HL2 at 1920x1440 with max settings, but I think it disabled AA and AF. To my great surprise, the game was smooth! It felt no different than my usual 1024x768 with 4x AA and 16x AF configuration. The only difference was it appeared sharper again.

I was thinking about kicking up my usual resolution of 1024x768 to 1280x1024. However, my monitor can do 100hz at 1024x768, but only 85hz at 1280x1024, and only 60hz at 1920x1200 or 1920x1440.

Now I'm wondering if I'm living in the past at 1024x768. Those higher resolutions look awesome...

1400x1050, laptop.
Incidentally, why is it that 14 and 15 inch laptops can hit 1400x1050 and 1600x1200 while desktop 19 inch panels rarely do, let alone the 15 and 17 inch units?

1400x1050 added.

I'm using a 19" Viewsonic G90fB, which is an average monitor in my opinion. It's not junk, but it's not high end either. It does 1920x1440...

Ugh, before I read the whole post I thought you were talking about desktop resolution. (Mine is 1600x 1200 large fonts, 19" crt)

Games - depends on the game, anywhere from 1024 x 768 to 1280 x 960 usually with 4xAA and 8xAF if it doesn't make things too choppy. 9700 Pro. It's starting to show its age, but it's done so gracefully.

Desktop, 1280x1024. Haven't really tried anything higher than that. For games, I generally use 800x600 because my graphics card is crappy. When I get my new computer that will probably go up to 1600x1200 hopefully. Then again I may get an LCD monitor in which case I'd be maxing out at 1280x1024 anyway.

Newer games at 1600x1200 w/ 8xAF and no AA or 4xAA depending on the game. Older games at 2048x1536 w/ 8 or 16x AF and no AA.

1024*768, and I enabled large fonts. I'd just say screw it and go 800*600 but that is WAAAAY too pixelated. Either way I like to read my desktop even if I'm about 20 feet away from the moniter I would go higher resolutions, and then crank the font size even larger but then my moniter can only do 85hz at 1024*768 and drops to 60Hz anything after that so it isn't worth it to me (though i think 72 hhz at 1152*864 (is that the correct ratio i don't remember)

and I game at 800*600 or 1024*768 if its an older game...I will squeeze out every bit of life from my G4mx420 because I move on! And considering CS source is beautiful at 800*600 and that is what i mainly play...I have a feeling three years from now I'll still play on this sucker XD

How can you people see text at a resolution that high? My desk top is 1152 x 864 , large text and large icons and in some sites ( anandteck inculded ) the text gets too small to read. I am running a 19" CRT. I usually run games at 1280 x 1024.

My standard gaming setting is 1920x1440 with 16xAF and 4xAA. Of course some games run at higher settings and some at lower settings.

1280x1024 for desktop use (17" flat panel at native resolution). For gaming I try my best to do that resolution but on some games my hardware isn't up to it so I use the highest setting it can handle.

My new resolution is 1280x1024. Strangely, I can't tell a difference in performance between 1024x768 and 1280x1024. But it looks better

However, the small text may be giving me a headache...
