What resolution should I use?

I guess this question is what do you use, as well. I have a 17in CRT monitor and I'm wondering what resolution I should use... 1152x864 or 1280x1024? Is there a way to see what's best for my monitor or is it mostly personal preference? Also, I noticed that the first option has a maximum refresh rate of 65 and the second is 75 so I don't really know what that means... thanks.

rule of thumb: if you gotta squint then it is too high.

personally I do not like 1280x1024 because it is not a standard aspect ratio so pictures look fatter than they should

i use 1152. 1280 is too small, and 1024 just looks like crap to me.

edit: oh, and the 75hz will be easier on the eyes.

Run the highest resolution with a 4:3 ratio that gives you at least a 75 Hz refresh rate.

The last 17" monitor I had I ran it at 1152 x 864 @ 75 Hz.

You should use what is comfortable for you and your eyes. And what is supported by your monitor. That info can be had at the manufacturer's website, the user manual, or Windows itself (via the advanced setting "Hide resolutions this monitor can not display, or some such worded setting).

I have a 19" that I used to run at 1600x1200. The 17" it is paired with is maxed out at 1280x960. I like the higher resolution, but age and eye surgery has conspired against me. Now both run at 1280x960.

One important thing to note is that some LCDs run at 1280x1024 and are actually 5:4 screens and thus running at the correct ratio. But yeah, pretty much any CRT running at that res is going to be distorted a bit.

It all depends on you. Try out different resolutions. I find my 1152 75hz uncomfortable, so I do 1024 at 85 hz.

I run at the highest resolution that will allow a 100Hz refresh rate. Anything else is like looking at the sun.

For me that's 1280x960. 120Hz is better, but I'd be limited to like 800x600@120Hz.

i run at the highest i can with an 85hz refresh rate. (less flicker = win) would go for 100hz but my monitor is not that good. anyway im at 1280x1024 now.

I feel rather weird running both a 21" and a 19" at 1024x768x32 @ 85Hz.

I just seem to like that resolution. Everything is nice, large, and readable. Enough desktop space for my needs.

Now i could go to 2400x1600. But my icons are smaller than my fingernails and I'm not exactly comfortable trying to read that small of text. That and there is so much wasted space :/

1280x960 seems to be the winning res on my 19" ViewSonic. I like 1280x1024 also, but I can't decide which I like better.

Hmm, you should run 75Hz refresh rate minimum (I prefer 85Hz but can stand 75Hz because I like the extra desk space I get from 1600x1200 on my 19 inch CRT). 1280x1024 is an improper aspect ratio to run on CRTs (it's the proper ratio for 17 to 19 inch LCDs, however), and anyone who runs that res and does any graphics design or other perspective-critical work is just simply stupid.

I run at 75hz and stare at my screen more hours per day than probably at least 90% of the people in this thread. Doesn't bother me whatsoever.

I always run the refresh rate at the highest my monitor/videocard will support at a specific resolution. I'm at 1024x768 right now, running 120Hz. The monitor supports 144Hz, but the drivers don't seem to. I can easily see flickering at 75Hz, up through around 85Hz. It's good above that then.

Until a decent LCD comes out, I'm still on my Sony 17" 200ES. I run at 1024x768 @ 85Hz. I don't like _anything_ below 85Hz as it strains my eyes. Even 75Hz.
