Right now i'm using smart guardian which came with the soyo dragon plus, but i've heard that it really slows down your machine, so I was wondering what else is good out there?

Download Motherboard Monitor 5 (MBM 5). It's a great little app that will run in the background and not take many cpu cycles. It will tell you the temp on mobo and cpu as well as the rpms of fans and other specs on the mobo. Good utility to have!
I always use what comes with the motherboard - that assures the best compatibility and the most reliable monitoring.
As for the CPU utilization, just run the System Monitor (Program Files - Accessories - System Tools). It tells you the CPU utilization. Check with and without your temp. monitor running. I really doubt that a low-pririty process that does nothing but poll the motherboard for termperature every second or so consumes a lot of CPU power...
