Before I entered the Pentium arena, I think all my 286/386/486 Motherboards (I think there were 4 of them) were all various brands ranging from SuperMicro and other stuff I don't remember.
I've built three Pentium class systems over the past 2 years: the first was a Pentium II/300, the second was a Pentium II/400, and the third is now a Pentium III/733. All three have been on Asus motherboards.
After I bought my first P2B for the PII/300 and installed it without a single problem, fault, or conflict I decided I was more than satisfied with Asus.
My second was my first experiment with PC SCSI. I had been doing Solaris administration for a couple of years on UltraSparcs with SCSI Raids and I decided to see what PC SCSI performance I would get. The second MB was an Asus P2B-S -- expensive as hell =) but worth it for the time that I used it. It's still in another system that I have at home. Never had a problem with that MB either.
My third is now the CUSL2. It's the first Asus that I had to fiddle around with to get working. My first attempt with the board and Hyundai PC133 SDRAM failed miserably, so I had to change to PC133 Micron. I've had this system up and running for two months now.
