You don't need drivers for the drive itself, but for the SATA controller.

If you're using the SATA ports that are native to the motherboard chipset, then chances are you won't need additional drivers. If you're using some other SATA solution such as Promise or HighPoint, you may need drivers.

Edit: Oops, forgot to finish my sentence.

If you don't install SATA drivers, the drive will still be recognized, but what happens is it'll be seen as two seperate drives. Assume you have one "C" SATA drive and one "D" CD-ROM drive. What you will see in your explorer is a "C" IDE drive, a "D" CD-ROM drive, and an unrecognized "E" drive with no access.

As far as I know, performance will still be the same, but if you don't install SATA controller drivers, your Windows bootup will take around 2mins, even on a Raptor. The "windows bar" ticks around 30 times to bootup, whereas it only takes 1 1/2 ticks when I have the SATA controller installed.

It depends on OS. If you have Windows XP, you need to install SATA drivers because XP doesn't naturally have them.

not if you are running off the mobo

Sorry, but what does that mean?

Motherboards with native SATA support do not need extra drivers while installing a SATA hard drive. Unless manufacturers differ on this...they use the windows one

It does somewhat depend on the mobo, & SATA controller i believe.

With my former MSI Neo2 for example, i needed SATA drivers to load Windows.

With nF4/RD480+, you shouldn't need SATA drivers for XP AFAIK.

You only need the floopy if your SATA controller is not part of the native chipset or if your using RAID. If the controller is native, it is treated just like a traditional IDE drive.

What MoBo are you using? I know for a fact that ASUS boards (with nForce4 chipset) DO NOT need you to load SATA drivers, unless you are using a RAID.

My nForce4 Ultra needed drivers for nVidia's native SATA.

If you have SP1 or higher for XP it includes the drivers AFAIK.

If you your Mobo has native SATA support and you plug your drive into one of those ports then you don't need to load any drivers. You will only need to add the additional drivers at the F6 screen if:
a. you want to run a RAID config
b. your board doesn't support native SATA
c. if your board like mine also has non-native SATA ports and you plug your drive into one of those

If you have an nForce board and XP SP1 or newer, you don't need SATA drivers.

VIA, SiS and ULi chipsets need drivers.

Not sure about newer Intel chipsets.

I have an Intel 915PBL and I when I was reloading my OS last week and since I just went with the stock Windows drivers. Once Windows installed thinking the drive was a standard IDE drive, the proper optimized SATA drivers installed with all the other chipset drivers. The only time you need SATA drivers is when you are using a SATA controller that is added on to the mobo seperate from the main chipset (like the SATA ports on the old A7N8X-DX) or doing something funky like installing your OS on a RAID array or enabling NCQ.
