Front and Rear brake pad replacement. With turning the the rotors.

Called couple places and getting quotes of $350+

Is that the going rate nowadays?

Does that include the parts? Labor rates are typically 80-100 bucks an hour.

If that includes OEM parts and labor, it's a solid price to have someone else do it.

FYI, you should be able to get around 100,000 miles from a set of front pads on the Accord, and 50,000 or so on the rears. I find brake pads are one of places where even "reputable" shops tend to tell you they need to be replaced way too early. I suppose they go really conservative to cover their butts, but it's also something they know 99% of customers will never check themselves and will think "gee, that's a safety thing, I better play it safe and get them replaced!"

don't waste money turning the rotors as new ones are very inexpensive. if only pads front and rear check parts prices at rockauto.com and then add the labor charge for perhaps 2 hours. after that you can see if the price is inflated.

I think you have that reversed? 100k on fronts but not rears? And for the record, I've never known anyone to get 100k out of a set of front pads. Maybe its possible, but I've never seen it.

Brake pads have depth gauges that squeal when you get low. That's when ya know to change them.

i agree 100k miles is very long before changing the pads...maybe 50k? Max.

i got 75k out of the first set on my truck. some people only get 30k out of a set. all depends on how you drive.

Definitely driving style dependent. I've had two cars I put over 100k on. Never touched the brakes. On our WRX I did a full brake job at maybe 50k but that was to upgrade to bigger rotors and such. The ones that came off looked easily over 50% and I don't anticipate having to touch them for many years to come (currently just over 100k). My wife and I generally don't brake hard....acceleration is much more fun

I have almost 60,000 miles on my Camry Hybrid and I've had to do nothing to the brakes.

Don't you have regenerative braking though? If so you're a ringer and are dq'd.

Anyways, some of you brake like grandmas... The environment plays a key, city vs rural, level of population, etc. That said 100K is on the high side, and obviously the rear brakes do not wear twice as fast as the fronts. I think whomever picked 100k was just pulling numbers out of the air.

In some cars the rears do wear much faster though. I wonder how much of that is due to using thinner pads though?

And yes, I do brake like a grandma. What's the point of braking hard? I don't race from stoplight to stoplight.....

i'll give you a quote from where i work

Front Brake Re-Line 70.00
Front Pads 55.44
Front Rotors 198.10

Rear Brake Re-Line 105.00
Rear Brake Pads 48.42
Rear Brake Rotors 115.00

591.96
then 13 percent tax
668.91

seems like a lot but i use these really great rotors for ontario.

they are electro-coated and do not rust which saves your brakes.

Well, most of us in the garage live our lives 1/4 mile at a time, so we use and abuse the pads.

or, ya know, maybe not?

On my Insight, I bought a set of front pads at 160K, only to find I still had some life left in them. I like the new pads better though.

Yes, but I really just drive it like a normal car... in fact, I drive it like my normal maniac self and I do use the brakes, not just the regenerative braking. Plus, I live in SoCal so a fair amount of stop and go driving.

You guys are missing my point.

Hybrids that use regenerative braking are using the brake energy to convert back into power. In other words you do not use the real brakes as often which wastes energy. See below. Hybrids have very long brake life because regen braking is awesome stuff.

 • Foot off throttle but not on brake pedal - In this mode, the charge/assist gauge will show partial charge, and the vehicle will slow down gradually.

 • Foot on brake pedal - In this mode, a higher amount of regeneration will be allowed, and the vehicle will slow more rapidly. During light brake pedal application, only the IMA Motor/Generator is slowing the car. With heavier brake pedal application, the conventional friction brakes also come into play.

Agreed. Even if you don't actively try to use regen it still reduces the wear on the brakes.

Like this:

Basically you hit the S+ button when the battery is reasonably full and get a "burst" of assist.

A lot depends on the car too.

My forester can handle 50-60K on pads. (front).

My previous car, a 300M, needed new pads every 15-20K miles. (It also weighed about 25% more)

Changed fronts on my 2005 ford focus at 117,000 and they still had months left. They were not squealing and showed no signs of issues.

I've done pad replacement on 3 cars, a 2005 Sentra, 2006 fusion, and 2007 fusion. All had over 100k on the pads, none were on the wear bars, and all probably had another 20k in them easy. Even more left in the rears. Only one was a manual (which can help significantly)

But for non-towing applications, in relatively light modern sedans and such, if you can't get 100k out of a pair of ceramic pads you're probably using brakes more than you need to, and probably aren't doing a very good job of anticipating

I had about 90k on the fronts and rears of my Passat before I traded it in. I did a brake flush a few months prior to trading it (which requires taking the wheels off), and they looked to have about 1/2 - 1/3 of life left on the pads.

Is that the going rate nowadays?

do it yourself?
new rotors at autozone is cheaper than a garage turning the rotors.
brake pads are also cheap.

and it's easy.. pop 2 pins.
and while ordering new rotors, buy a c-clamp to push in the caliper.

youtube videos is your friend
