The only acceptable response to the question "What should I do in ____?" is "two chicks at the same time."

In Tokyo?
Akibahara (Akiba!) district for all the crazy electronics. Make sure to street walk after sunset.
Shibuya for people watching.

Maybe a short 1-2 day trip out of Tokyo to Kamakura for the more traditional stuff.

For good ramen, seek out a ramen shop called Kyushu Jangara. In a couple of locations in Tokyo.

You could probably squeeze in a trip to Mt Fuji. 1.5 weeks is kinda short if you factor in the flight time and adjusting to jet-lag.

all of these responses are lame.

Visit tsukiji market before it closes for good.
go to a local mom and pop sushi joint and sit at the counter
eat lots of ramen.
go to cat cafe
get souviniers depending on what you like. tons of places to shop in tokyo and kyoto.
as someone said before, black black is awesome. so are mitsuya ciders and flavored kitkats. french pastries and confectionaries here are amazing
shibuya crossing is awesome. omotesando / harajuku for fashion stuff. go to shimokitazawa for the hipness. akihabara if you like the geeky stuff. kappabashi if you want stuff for your kitchen.

and how could i forget ameyokocho, my favorite place to shop in all of tokyo. yanaka is a really cool afternoon stroll to get an "old" tokyo feel.

in kyoto visit ginkakuji, kinkakuji, kiyomizudera temples. hike daimonji mountain if you have time. visit arashiyama bamboo forest. visit a sake brewery. walk up and down pontocho street, bar hop and hang out along the river. the suntory yamazaki factory is also a train ride away. those are just a start. pm me if you want more info on something.

That should keep you busy.

They don't look like your porno movies FYI. Have you ever seen an authentic Japanese girl? Their teeth are worse than the Brits.

Depends on the girls I guess.

I had two very pretty Japanese sister-in-laws and a mother-in-law at one time, but I guess she was an Executive-VP at Xerox at the time.

The weren't mail order I guess.

Well we are talking about one that would actually marry rudeguy. I'm thinking maybe the Japanese equivalent of the boonies up in the rice paddies could be convinced to throw her life away.

Kamakura
Akihabara
Asakusa
Harajuku/Shinjuku
Shibuya

Be sure to walk around a Yodobashi Camera

I've spent some time in Yokohama and think everyone should take a trip there if you're spending a lot of time in the Tokyo area. Depending on where you are in Tokyo it's only about 30-45 minutes by train and you can easily fill a day just walking around from the Landmark Tower/Minato-Mirai area. There is an amazing China Town nearby as well that makes the trip worth it in and of itself.

Do yourself a favor and enjoy some Shabu Shabu somewhere. Anywhere. So excellent.

nara might be a little bit far for him to travel if he's only there for 1.5 weeks.

also try monjayaki in tokyo. its like okonomiyaki but better. agreed on yokohama. it's a pretty cool place. Just spend 2 weeks there myself and went to a belgian beer festival at yamashita park. yokohama ramen museum is a must see attraction. the nissan global HQ is pretty awesome if you're into nissan. they rotate classic vehicles for viewing, along with having their entire current lineup, including the GTR. they had a mint condition silvia when i was there. Ferris wheel near the landmark tower is pretty awesome. so is the landmark tower itself. skip the tokyo tower and sky tree and go here instead. no lines. try avoiding lines in japan at all costs.

i friggin love japan. can't wait to go back now

The Nissan showroom is awesome. You're right evident, there is always something new rotating in there. Try to visit it every time I'm in Yokohama and the cool thing is it's basically attached to Yokohama station. 10 minute walk from train to showroom makes it an easy choice to visit. Another 15-20 minute walk from the showroom and you can be at Landmark Tower. Forgot to mention this but if you like cool cars there is a Ferrari / Rolls Royce show room attached to Landmark Tower.

OP, it might even be worth your time to spend one night in Yokohama. There's a nice Sheraton attached to the Yokohama station or the Royal Park Hotel that is in the Landmark Tower. Both are reasonably priced and have rooms much closer in size to what Americans are accustomed to.

Rent a GTR and go for a spin.

He would need an international driver's license for that, at minimum i think. Driving in japan can be difficult if he cant read the signs. but yeah driving an R34 GTR would be sweet

take your pick. don't do the rush everywhere. pick a place or two a day.

this is also the best advice. being rushed on vacation and just going from one place to another really sucks

I would NOT want to drive in Japan. I was nervous enough in the cabs being driven by people who know what to do. If you can even find enough space to make renting a GTR worth a crap I don't think it'd be fun.

Okonomiyaki. All...day...long. Don't even do anything else just eat that shit.

Hell yeah. Went to an awesome place in Osaka where each booth has it's own flat top and they just put everything on it for you, then you gorge yourself right off it while it's super hot and caramelizing. So good; love that shit!

If I ever go to Japan, I want to wear a godzilla suite, and then get drunk, and rawr around town like a fool. If you are tall, you may wish to add this to your bucket list.

Go to a Cuddle Cafe then post a review/summary of how weirded out you were from this experience.

While I would like to go to many of these places, my wife being with me is eliminating a good portion of the suggestions here
