thanks for the support for sli having better minimum framerates guys (joker too )

i tried pretty hard looking for an exact article about this but came up short
lol

the 512mb vs 256mb article is indeed interesting

but not many people run their screen at 2048x1536 w/4aa

i think not even a gt sli can handle a resolution that high with 4aa

power consumption and heat wise...yea

but performance?!....gtx > gt sli?!

100 bucks more for what 10-15 frames? maybe he has to buy a sli mobo? maybe he has to buy a better psu? theres many factors.

we're strictly talking about the video cards here
and i'm almost sure that the gt sli would most definitely have higher minimum framerates

and higher minimum framerates is what virtually every gamer craves
Nope.
Doubt it look at the benchmarks.

There aren't many 7900 GT SLi benchmarks out there but since it's the same architecture as G70, you can compare the difference between 7800 GT SLi and single 7800 GTX min. fps and see that you're wrong: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/asus-7800gt_11.html
Moonboy is right, with SLi you will get higher min. fps over a single card. Suggesting that a single gtx>sli gt is stupid.

10-15fp in most games for 100$ no thanks

If you applied that argument, you might aswell buy a single 7900 GT over a 7900 GTX, or better yet a single 7600 over a 7900 GT and so on and so on.
Unfortunately in this day an age, 10+fps difference is worth big money. Especially at higher resolution gaming.
Thankfully for you, it's only videophiles like me that spend the big bucks on it.

yes, i know i have nothing to back up with because there aren't any 79 series review displaying the minimum framerates

BUT it's a pretty well known fact AND i've experienced it goin from a 7800 gtx to 7800 gt sli

The 10-15fps boost wouldnt matter if you were going from 100fps to 110/115fps but it might matter if going from say 50fps to 60/65fps (hypothectical made up numbers). Kinda depends on how you look at it. Ignoring costs, 2x7900GT is better/faster than 1x7900GTX I'm thinking.

Look at it this way. When you get the 7900GT's, there is some room for Overclocking. So, with a bit of luck, maby you can reach GTX speeds with the GT since don't they have the same ram/core?

I've read recently that fitting the 7900 GT with an NV silencer 5 didnt help OC's?
Now I'm afraid of spending 40 odd pounds on two Zalman VF900's only to find they dont help OC's.
Thankfully, I already have one Vantek Spectrum dual fan card, so what I've done is just bought another.

I'm thinking of leaving the stock cooler on there, but hopefully having a vantek dual fan card under each 7900 GT.
That should keep things mighty cool.
Especially considering the ram chips are naked.

Yea, just look at your nick, says it all

Anyways, good point about the noise, and we arent factoring OC'ed Gts here, the boost would be even larger compared to OC'ed GTX, so i would still get 2 GTs

If you want my personal opinion though, id go with an x1900xt

I still stand by my not recommending a thing until Crescent gives us more info regarding his system, display, and settings preference. IMO, nobody can accurately recommend anything without knowing all of that.

However, I may soon find myself in the exact same situation when my copy of Oblivion arrives. I make it a point to not upgrade until the game I want to play doesn't run the way I want it to. So, I'm going to see how these ol' SLI 6800GTs hold up. My guess is, they won't.

If I'm right, I'll be grabbing either a 1900XT, 7900GTX, or SLI 7900GTs. Whichever of those 3 run the game the best for my money. Looks like anywhere between $450-$600, with the XT looking to be the strongest candidate. I'm leaning away from the GTs because of the 256mb ram. $150 more for the extra performance alone isn't enough I don't think. Give them another 256mb ram for the same price and I'd be sold. Eagerly awaiting benchmarks, though...

Yes, I agree.

For example, if he has a 19" LCD there's no point in wasting the extra money for a 7900 GT SLI, with the added heat/power/noise etc., a 7900 GTX would do him fine. But if he has a monster display that can support high resolutions, SLI could be useful for him.

You could even buy a single 7900 GT now and be fine with that until you find a game that you really want the extra performance for, and it will save you some $ because by the time you get the 2nd one the price should have dropped by a little bit.

I was thinking about 2 7900gts myself. But not sure if 256mb of memory will be sufficient for the upcoming games.

Based on this thread/article, I tend to agree with you. I'm going to wait til Oblivion comes out and hopefully there will be some benchies that might help answer the whole 256/512mb vram question.
