LOL. I have lived in LA for 12 years. I have never been stalked, mugged, stared down by gangstas, involved (not voluntarily) in a drive by or witnessed a murder.

I did witness a robbery once.

San Diego is nice though.

BTW, do not get me wrong: There are A LOT of problem with L.A., but certainly no more or no more severe than any other large city. It just bothers me when people talk about L.A. like it is the only big city with problems.

I am originally from San Francisco, and I love it, but don't get me started on the problems there. They put L.A.'s problems to shame.

I lived in Malibu for 2 years, and Agoura Hills for 7 years. LA ain't so bad when you live just outside it in nice areas. That way you can GTFO when you need to. I knew people that lived in N. Hollywood or Studio City. I'd have to have a pretty sweet-paying job that REQUIRED me to live in those areas to get me to agree to it.

I'm 6 miles from work and can ride the subway or drive to work in ~30 minutes, walk to grocery store, etc... so I'm pretty happy here.

Go to the Hat, get the pastrami cheese fries, tell me if you live.

Take the subway - you should be close - to Hollywood. Do the Hollywood Tourist thing. Get back on the subway, go to Olvera Street.

Take in LACMA, walk across the street to the tarpits.

Go to Malibu, enjoy the beaches.

The Getty has awesome views. You can also try to get into the Getty at Malibu too, if you get tickets.

Go to Griffith Park and the observatory. Take pictures of the Hollywood Sign.

Okay I am guilty of picking on the City of Angels with my comments. Having lived in Sacramento, I know of the troubles of some big cities and the bad rap they get. Hell I live in a podunk town in NC and we have troubles of our own with gang related killings and such. So yeah, L.A. is not the only place with troubles. Maybe just smog.

That's quite a drive from N. Hollywood, but I know what you're talking about. Go to The Hat with like 4 people and split 1 order of fries. I just leave 'em in the brown bag and tear the top of the bag off.

The better beaches are farther north by county line. IMHO.

I recommend hanging out at any of the local bars around Main and Pier in Santa Monica. There's always a slew of good looking young women hanging out around there. One of my very best friends lives in a rent-controlled apartment on Main and Marine. Not a bad gig.

Oh yeah, there's also Melrose and Pink's Hot Dogs off Melrose (always a giant line there) ... I can't think of much more though, (Not native to LA... nor do I travel there much.)
