What should I tip the movers tomorrow?

So my company is paying for people to pack and move my stuff (yet not paying me for the move) tomorrow. I've never experienced this, so I'm not sure what to tip. They're going to be packing and moving three bookcases, two desks, a recliner, a queen sized bed, and few boxes of miscellaneous stuff. There's a half set of stairs to negotiate, though there is an elevator.

I was thinking $40-60 each for the pick up and then another $40-60 each for the unload later this week. Does that seem reasonable? I'm also going to go grab some sodas for them tonight. Sound about right?

"Learn a trade so you don't spend your life as a mule" is the best tip you can give them :^P

If you insist on money, your amounts sound high to me. I'd break it down to minimum wage for whatever amount of time they spend, then round up to the nearest $10.

Depends. Are there twelve of them? Or two?

Sucks that it isn't a one day job, because whatever you're tipping would simply be tipped after you've been moved. The two day thing is awkward.

Having done that type of work I would be very happy and appreciative with $20 and even more with $40. $60 gets you a new name Mr. Moneybags!

And a cold soda can be so GOOD when your busting your ass.....

I've never moved to take a job. What does the bolded part mean? That you'd be paid money just for the trouble of relocating? I always assumed that the payment made would be for the costs involved in moving, and not much else.

It's one of those things where they'll put my stuff on a truck and then load up someone else, unloading them first and getting to me later. It's the moving truck version of stack. Sounds like maybe 40 each for now. The place I'm moving into is on the 3rd floor, so I might show some more love on delivery day. I'll grab a few cans of different soda and some tea or something. Unfortunately I don't know how many movers there will be. I'm going to get enough for three people. If there are more... well, I guess everyone gets a little less.

They're not giving me a billing code for the two days of down time. Since they've completely messed with our holiday and PTO, I have a lot less than I expected to have at this point, so I'll be working a little this weekend to make up for it.

Personally, I'd wait until it was unloaded. No sense in tipping them if they break or lose (steal) your stuff...

When I have hired movers in the past few years i give about 20 per mover. It doesn't sound like you have too much stuff so I think 20 each sounds generous.

I've never heard of tipping movers. They dont rely on tips for income so I would probably not do it.
I sort-of have heard of tipping movers. In his situation where they're contracted out I kinda see it. My parents tipped the trash man once when they cleaned out like the entire basement and had a ton of trash.

I wouldn't tip personal movers... you're already paying them...

Depends on the office too, office politics and all.

Make sure they're not carrying valuables of yours when you tip them.

There is no requirement to tip movers. Nobody does that. They are already getting paid.

It doesn't sound overly arduous so I'm not sure about tipping especially if there is a second crew involved, although it depends on how efficiently they work IMO. If you do decide to do it $20 each should be enough. They would also probably prefer its evenly divisible by the number of workers. I used to do some moving work 10 years ago and regularly received between $0.75-$80 in tips. (One lady gave us a $3 tip for the 4 of us.) We never felt it was required but it was certainly nice. For our setup I preferred when the tip was given to the guy in charge of the job for divvying up as certain workers were assigned the harder tasks because they were better at them. They often got more of the tip than the others due to their effort.

While I agree that there is no requirement its not true that no one does that.

I guess if I could afford movers, I could afford to tip them as well. Last time I moved I had some guys haul some shit away to the dump (couches, old bed, etc), tipped them with a bag of frozen steaks because they came back for a second load of trash on the house.
