Hello,

here's what I have now on my other old comp : P-2-333@375/128MB Generic/TNT2 Ultra/MB - unknown/.... and running Win2k Adv.Serv.

if I upgrade memory to like 256 , will it make a lot of difference ? ... I would upgrade cpu , but that MB suppots up to 400 or something ... and I don't wanna spend a lot of money for MB+CPU ... anyway , I don't work on that comp ... it justs stands there and runs like server 24/7 ... my parents/sister works there sometimes ...

u could really use a faster cpu, more than another 128mb ram.

get the fastest P3 your budget or mobo can afford. usually with a bios update, the mobo can support much higher than said on it's spec sheet.

if you are running win2k adv server, YES upgrade the memory before you do ANYTHING else. It will make a huge difference in paging / system reposonsiveness.

Ram is cheep but it won't get you nearly as large (if any) a performance boost as a faster processor would.

At the FS/FT forums, you could get a P-II 400, and 128 of RAM for not much over $120-$130.

To find out if you need more RAM (you probably do with Win2k server), monitor your mem usage in task manager. If you are consistently above 128MB, upgrade your RAM. It will make a bigger performance difference than upgrading your CPU. You don't want your CPU to be constantly waiting for data from the hard drive because you don't have enough RAM. That can become the bottleneck.

Edit: If you don't use the box for anything more than a server, then DEFINITELY upgrade the memory, the cpu is not a significant factor on most servers, unless you're running some database software on it or something.

Well , I just bought another stick of 128MB memory (mushkin one) ... and found out that my MB supports up to 256MB of memory ;( ... I found the max of P2 is 450 , is it gonna make any difference ... is it reasonable to spend like $80 for that cpu ? ... also my MB supports Celerons , is it good idea to buy Celeron or no ? ... or maybe it's better later to upgrade my whole MB+CPU to Duron?

I don't really care for perphormance right now ... at least I want a little bit more than I have now ... I don't work on that comp , but when I do something there I see veery big differnce with one that I work on (Duron 600@1ghz, 512MB PC133...) ... I just wanna make it easier to work on for my sister ...

As in it only has one DIMM slot? Sounds like your MB is mucho sucko, if you've got the cash you might as well upgrade it to a duron board/proc so you can use all of your memory...

no, it has two Dimm slots ... but on web-page it's says 256MB max ... and in manual it's says 256MB max on each ... so maybe 512 Max ... the MB is P6EX-Me
