So, I am a noobie (standard disclaimer etc)...
My computer is great but I want to upgrade it anyways but I can't decide where to draw the line. I have a single core AMD4000+, an nVidia7600gt, 1 gig of 3200 DDR and a non-sli mobo. I'd like to go Sli, but I would have to buy a new mobo. If I buy a new mobo I'll probably want to get a pentium e6600 and high speed ram to boot! Is it worth it? I play Battlefield 2, CS:S, CIV4 and do a bit of photoshopping with 6megpixel photos. My thinking is to sell my current rig while I still can (anyone in Toronto interested?).

How much money is in your pocket burning?

If you do want to try to sell it, head over to the FS/FT area and post up a thread after reading the rules for that area.

Simple... just get a dual core X2 or opteron.
And of course a 74-150GB Raptor.

But for gaming would I see an improvement from a 2.4g AMD 4000 to go dual core? My understanding was that dual core was mainly best for multiple aplications, not games.
Wouldn't I be better off SLi?

I see you play Battlefield 2 and only have 1 GB of RAM. If you play that, and are a gamer in general, get another GB of RAM. It's not really that much for just 1 GB.

but looking at how much he has to spend, it may just be a better idea to go with a new rig, another gig of ram will improve performance, but he wants to spend his money... could always give some of it to me i guess, i really need to upgrade my pc, especially if im gonna buy supreme commander when it comes out.

That was my thinking exactly. Plus I was thinking of getting faster ram, which my mobo doesn't support....

Ya. I would like to sell the CPU, graphics card, MoBo and 1 gig of DDR3300. That should get me a little start up $ for a c2d e6600!!
But would it make a HUGE difference?

well if you would sell it, i wouldnt mind getting my hands on the mobo, cpu and ram, im actually getting a 7600 pretty soon, so not interested in that, if so, pricing?

[and you could easily overclock a Core 2 6400 to the speeds of a 6600, that would save you some money, for say, more ram...]

You sure are a pretty man. What's your sexual orientation???
BAH!!!! I am just kidding with ya.... No offence please.

If i had your money to spend i would go for C2D and a better vga card. I recommend not to think about SLI but to purchase a single more expensive vga card.
Since you are a gamer (judging on the looks and accessories of your rig) try thinking about more recent VGA cards DX10 compatible which should come out shortly.
I would recommend E6400+Intel965 chipset+upcoming DX10 ATI vga cards.

No offence on my comment please

On a budget? Get the best Video card you can afford, it will give you the biggest performance increase for gaming.

Full upgrade? (Canadian Prices)
C2D E6400 ~ $220
Gigabyte 965P-S3 ~$150
2GB Corsair DDR2-800 ~$310
Freezer 7 Pro HSF ~$30

That's around $700. Add a 8800GTX for ~$700+ or a 8800GTS for around $500

Overclock to 3.2GHz (should be easily attainable with that setup, without heat being a big problem)

You'll have a screaming gaming rig, that will play anything at max detail and high resolutions.

Depending on your power supply, you may have to upgrade that as well, figure ~$100 for half decent quality. You could also throw in a new Seagate 320 GB Sata Drive for around $120
