What sign would you need to believe that the world was coming to an end?

I personally am not convinced that the end is near but some of my friends are pretty convinced. I can see where they are coming from though...the wars being fought, the incredible natural disasters, the economy going to hell.

So at what point would you start to wonder if the world really was coming to an end?

Hmm, the world comming to an end or our type of life we are leading right now comming to an end?

I would think the world was comming to an end when I saw the earthquaked tearing the world itself apart imo.

Or a large Hardon going for the black hole.

The economy is in pretty good shape -- except for maybe the late 1990s, at no time has mankind had it better. Natural disasters are not historically far our of line. There are currently no major wars ongoing in the world -- there were more deaths in a single WWI charge than the total casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan on both sides combined. Your friends are either idiots, or are listening to idiots.

Mankind will be around for another few millenia, at least.

Please name a point in history that there wasnt war/natural disasters/bad economies

Thermonuclear war, or an yet undiscovered asteroid are about the most realistic ways the world will "end" anytime soon.

I mean, seriously, if I had friends who thought there was a good chance that the world was going to end in the next few decades, I'd be making fun of them relentlessly.

I don't believe in vague, superstitious "signs" that require leaps of faith to reach such a conclusion. So it's gonna have to be pretty damn convincing, leaving little room for interpretation. It would take something like an imminent nuclear war, an asteroid on a collision course or a nearby star going super nova.

If the world is coming to an end you'd know at least 5 years beforehand, so you will have plenty of time to whine about it. Because if one thinks deeply they'll know earth cannot be vaporized in 5 seconds. But the real truth is: the earth itself is not there, the entire universe is a delusive manifestation fooling everyone so that they can have a purpose for their existence.

I don't think there's such a thing as an imminent nuclear war. If we see it coming, we're probably gonna not do it.

True. To split hairs, nuclear war would just set civilization back a few millenia, probably not wipe out humanity. After all, nobody's going to bother nuking bolivia or madagascar, and people would survive (not much of a life, granted) a nuclear winter.

For me, anything that causes my immediate death be it a doctor saying i had something terminal and had 2 months to live, mushroom cloud close-by, etc. Pretty much it means the world as I know it will be over as far as I'm concerned.

The most that economic meltdown is going to lead to is another dark ages/collapse of current western civilisation, which isn't the end of the world. It's the end of civilisation as we (in the west) know it.
