I 2nd Daemon Tools. Use it all the time, use Disc Dump to drop the images and go. Haven't run into much of anything that I can't get to work this way. The added bonus is that the newest version of Nero and CDRWin can use the .cue files that Disc Dump makes and burn nice copies to use, if you want to go that route, which I do since I don't have as much HDD space as I need. So, I just make 2 copies (one for me, one for the wife) and put the original away. I keep about 5 images of the stuff I play the most/stuff the access the CD alot as images to mount in Daemon Tools, but don't have the space for more.
This works with Safe Disc2 stuff as well. I did it with Morrowind, and Dungeon Seige, no issues at all (well the Disc Dump took like 80 minutes because of how Safe Disc works, but that is no big deal, just started it before I went to bed).
I have also used DT to mount images that were on network drives as well, just pointed it to the file and was done, after mounting it.
I think Virtual Drive is the Virtual CD reincarnated. Virtual CD was alright, but Daemon Tools blows it away, it also installs quite easily with the latest version. I think it is the way to go.
