Frakes directed First Contact and Insurrection and his directorial style in both movies was actually pretty skilled (despite Insurrection's story being a snooze-fest). Rick Berman (the person responsible for making Star Trek into a shoot em up dystopia) was the main writer on all of the movies except for Nemesis. Berman is a terrible movie writer, and purposely went against Roddenberry's wishes after he died to add more violence and Federation "conspiracy" into the shows.

Frakes was replaced by Stuart Baird in Nemesis (who had very little movie directing experience at that point), and the cast has publicly said "he had no idea what he was doing." Baird when on to direct the Casino Royal and Skyfall Bond films, but has had a shaky reputation since.

That is a good point, the writing was so bad the director probably didn't matter. I recently re-watched all of TNG(over about 2 years) on Netflix and I tried to mix in the movies while I watched the episodes, but I didn't make it through any of them except first contact.

I remember Stuart Baird saying he'd never seen a Star Trek movie until he got the job.

What's her face that noodied up and they killed her off early in the show, then brought her back as another character.

EDIT: Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby)

That's because she wanted to pursue other interests. What a bad career move that turned out to be.

Those Tribbles should have their own series....

Wait....what if....

A show like 'MINIONS" from Despicable Me expect with Tribbles as the main characters. They could do their coo-talk thing, get into lots of funny hijinks...

THIS COULD BE A THING!

I think they were originally going to be the borg, but they changed them to cybernetic hybrids due to cost.
I heard they planned for the mind-control parasites to be the huge over-arching nemesis, but they decided the Borg was a better idea.

Khan should have had his own series, in which he becomes mayor of London and sorts out knife-crime and diesel emissions by means of his wrath.

Ensign Janice Rand and the (possible) relationship between her and Captain Kirk.

Classic Star Trek ...

Voyager did have some real gems hidden in all that mediocrity.

Year of Hell is basically what I imagine the entire voyager show should have been from the perspective of the ship and crew slowly breaking down over the long voyage home, with the series pivoting on how the captain and her crew do (or don't) uphold the ideals of the federation when faced with life or death choices on a daily basis. Instead we got low rent TNG.

Although he got plenty of screen time and was likely one of my favorite (really they were all my favorite) side characters in DS9, I could never get enough of General Martok. I really enjoyed what they did with his character in his mini-arc of overcomming Klingon PTSD after facing the Dominion. I feel like General Martok and Worf demand a Klingon buddy comedy spin off.

Those movies are so bad with the TNG cast. It's funny because I think they did a decent job on the movies with the original Star Trek cast, so I'm not sure why things went so downhill with the TNG cast. I think maybe part of the problem was the the show was written so well they just didn't have the additional content for the movies.
I suspect they wanted the movies to appeal to a broader audience.

Considering they continued to do worse and worse at the box office you would think they would change their strategy.

Again, the guy that wrote the TV shows wrote the scripts for the movies, and he had no idea how to scale things for a movie set. All of the movies could have been TV productions. The original Star Trek movies were written by experienced script writers (except for V, which was put together with duct tape due to a writers strike), which is why they have such a cinematic feel to them.
