The life of CasioTech, as depicted by himself across the vast internet.

such despair and self-loathing.

That one came to mind as well. Some very powerful scenes

The scene where they're walking out of the building with the crying baby and everything just stops is one of the most powerful scenes I've ever seen in a movie.

I'm going to go with 1984, but if that On The Beach book that loki mentioned is anything like its Wikipedia entry, then I think that might win.

1984 for sure, maybe Clockwork Orange. How about The Trial by Kafka, pretty bleak.

It's been awhile since I read it or watched the film but the main character's life was meager and pointless and the story itself is rather depressing.

it probably has torn me down over any other book...it took a week to recover just because i didn't know if that would be my life then i got the whole what am i gonna do here? the only book i actually read for 12th grade highschool english

1984

The Painted Bird affected me more, but I believe the people had more of an effect than the world or environment itself. Of course, the characters were a product of their environment, so that is why I'm listing it as well.

I felt a strange sense of despair just reading the wiki entry...

Book about the industrial revolution.

it's actually about the meatpacking Industry and immigration, not so much the scope of the Industrial Revolution. It's the book that taught us that we were eating severed Lithuanian fingers and toes in all of our packed meat.

This book is why we now have the FDA. kind of interesting to read it while living in Chicago.

For a game since not many people have put any down, Warhammer 40000, billions die a day to feed a corpse god/emperor's lust for war, pretty grim.

The Chronicles of Thomas Convenant, the Unbeliever.

The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.

The Thirst chronicles of Thomas Covenant.

Each chronicles get more and more bleak as it progresses. It's so painful to read but you must keep going XD

But arguably in Bioshock the only world which was torn down was actually a city, Rapture.
The topside is just the same as normal IIRC.
So while the game world is torn down, the world as a whole in the game isn't.

Well, there's movies/books where a totalitarian/dystopian government/entity controls everything, such as 1984, Brave new World, V for Vendetta, Brazil, Logan's Run, Fahrenheit 451, Children of Men, Equilibrium, THX 1137, Zardoz, Metropolis etc ....

Then there's ones where anarchy rules, Road Warrior, etc ...

Then there's the disaster/postnuclear war movies/books ... "The Day After" (which was a heaping pile of crap from the 80s) depicted a post nuclear war USA, it was pretty torn down and miserable .... Planet of the Apes movies, etc ...

And then there's ones where zombies take over the world and kill just about everyone, Night of the Living Dead, 28 Days Later, Dawn of the dead, The Omega Man, The Last Man on Earth, etc ...

I would say the absolute most torn down and desperate world of any that I've ever seen would be the Planet of the Apes series. Mankind is pretty much reduced to incompetent slaves or fvcked up cult members who worship a nuclear bomb.

I also think Last Man on Earth/The Omega Man/I Am Legend deserve a mention. The versions with Heston and Prices were darker than the Smith version, but all show pretty much hopelessness for humanity.
