66 at night works well for me. I keep it that all day because no one is there. The heat almost never runs as we are the 3rd floor of an apt building. my gas bill is about 20 dollars a month and electric is about 25.

68 in winter, 78 in summer. although this past summer during the 100 degree heat wave, and my a/c was running on little to no refrigerant, i had to set it at 87-88 to keep it from destroying itself, and it STILL felt cool versus coming in from outside.

17C (~66F-68F)

House is ancient and has no insulation, so try to save... I can get by reasonably at 17 C with only a t-shirt and sweat pants. I should move to Vancouver to avoid this shite.

Usually have it set at 72 year round.
Let the heating/AC system take care of the rest automatically.

How can I heat my house safely or cook when the power is out?

  • Never use a gas range or oven for heating. Using a gas range or oven for heating can cause a build up of CO inside your home, cabin, or camper.

I had more, but damn browser ate it. That's for the poster who heats his home with his gas oven set to 400.

We set our home to about 68 in the winter and 78 in the summer. At night it's 64 in the winter and 74 or 72 in summer.

I was trying to scale it off my mini-thermometer. Woops.

It's 18C in my room where the thermometer is right now. Take away the 24" monitor and 7W CFL sitting 1 foot under it, and it's probably 16-17C. Feeling fine... Get used to it living in a house with a shitty furnace for 3/4 of your life.

We actually went out and got an AC this summer when we had our little "heat wave." I kept it in the mid 60's in the half of the house cooled by the AC. In the winter, I usually keep the heat cranked to about 80 degrees in the hotter half of the house. Last winter, on one of the days when it dropped significantly below zero (F), I had the temperature in the dining room, living room, and kitchen in the mid 90's. I'm thinking that this year, I might actually insulate the attic so I can really keep the house warm.

The A/C comes on if it gets above 70F. Pretty much the same as summer really. It'll sometimes get into the mid 50s inside the house. That's fine by me.

Edit: Yes that means I don't use the central heat all winter.

72 Summer, 70 Winter. I have problems regulating my body temperature, and those seem to keep things balanced in enough of the house day to day with costs I can deal with.

Don't use a programmable thermostat in the winter with our geothermal heat/cool. Would end up costing us more for heat. In the summer, I set the floors we're not on a few degrees warmer and it seems to save $ for sure.

About 66-68.

If I'm cold, I do what anyone with some sense would do and put on a hoodie or something.

Absolutely hate it when peoples houses or public places are set to 75+ in the winter. It makes no sense to me. If it's really cold outside, you're probably wearing something warmer than a t-shirt, yeah? So why would you set the temperature so high that it's not comfortable to be in the room without taking clothes off?

The mall here is a great example, it has to be near 80 in there all winter long. So in order to be reasonable comfortable I have to take my coat off and carry it with me (which I really dislike) or leave it in my car and tough it out from the car to the entrance.

Also, for those who like it mid-60s or so... third floor or higher apartments = money.

Used to live on the third floor and I went through a couple winters with my thermostat set to 'off' the entire time, as the heat from the people below me and beside me was more than enough. It was awesome.

Probably about 66-68°. A bit colder when I'm gone for the day.

It's really hard to tell with this piece of shit thermostat in my apartment. I moved in and it had a pimp programmable one, but later the A/C did not work and they ended up installing this weak sauce thermostat that is not precise enough to really know the temp.

I just let it be whatever it is, it normally doesn't get super cold.

I love the cold and my dogs do too. Plus I spend most my time in the computer room which is always warm due to the pc.

pretty close to 70F all the time
i am willing to pay for comfort

and i have a well insulated house and ground source heat pump, so my heating/cooling bill only varies about $100-$120 from low to high winter or summer

Those who set it at 64 at night, any reason you don't go lower? I put mine at 60 and use a spaceheater... I guess it only makes sense if you only have one room occupied at night and that room happens to have a bathroom as well.
I hate getting up for work in the morning. Getting up out from under the covers into a 60° room makes that much worse.

A related gripe is people turning the thermostat up higher the colder it gets outside. If you're comfortable at 72 degrees, then why not leave the thermostat temperature at 72 degrees regardless of what the outside temperature is? Just because it's 30 degrees outside doesn't mean you have to turn the heat up to 85 to compensate.

I know, right?

and shit, 30 mid-winter is shorts weather here in ND. We're so used to ridiculously low temperatures that it don't really seem cold until it starts approaching 0.

... well, for most anyway. The one time that I can make an exception is for the elderly, they have an excuse.

Not sure why this is exactly either, but the feel of 'artificially heated' 80 degreees is WAY worse than 80 in the summertime is. I loathe the feeling of heat blowing directly on me, anywhere... I rarely use the heat in my car for anything but window defrosting until it gets well below zero. The feeling just makes me get all itchy and irritated
