What text editor do you use?

I'm using XP Pro SP3, and a recent install. At the moment I'm still using notepad. I used to use Spad, which has some nice features, the chiefest that comes to mind being able to launch URL's.

What do you use? Freeware?

I use UltraEdit at work and TextEdit at home. I use Vi if I'm on a Unix box.

I like notepad++ at work. I'd like to find a nice native x64 text editor for my home computer though.

I've used the free version of Editpad for years, but have started to use Notepad++ and Notepad2 for more features.

On a Unix box (local or ssh access) I use vim.

On a Mac, I use TextMate.

On Windows, it varies from TextPad to Notepad++ to gvim. But last week I found the holy grail of text editors in e which is a Windows port of TextMate. Absolutely brilliant. Google and look at some of the screencasts featuring TextMate and you'll understand why.

For the bizarre and very wide range of things I do, it's supremely adaptable. And I just, you know, like it.

I seem to get emotional about a text editor after taking the time to learn all of its facets. I still shed a tear once-in-a-while because I miss PC-Write (DOS).

This should have been a poll. I am perfectly happy with Notepad ++ , - both in XP and Vista.

I guess I use it more than just a text editor, but I have fallen in love with EPIM. I've been looking for a program like this for years! Being able to do collapsible outline view of notes is just wonderful.

Which of these supports launching browser windows/tabs by clicking URLs in documents? ...Notepad++? EPIM? gVim?

The Spad I refered to is spad.exe, which is the executable for Superpad, a notepad replacement. It does support launching any URL in a document by clicking it. It's ancient, though. I figure there's much better text editors out there.

I ran through the thread and counted straws. Counting just editors for Windows, votes by people who were clear on their preference:

Crimson Editor *

Notepad++ ****

Notepad *

EPIM *

Metapad *

Notepad2 *

NoteTab Pro *

EditPad Pro *

e *

gvim ***

[win]vile - when I want to get a lot done quickly.

Have tried many others mentioned here successfully but the speed potential of vi can't be matched since everything can be accomplished without menus or a mouse.

Is this what you are talking about?

README for vile, version 9.5

The FTP download link there has around 1/2 dozen different Win32 downloads for vile. Hard to know what to get/try.

It can get confusing for the uninitiated. There aren't many developers and they just develop. There is source available if interested (.tgz files + patches dir). I've never built it so don't know what the requirements are.

winvile-setup-9_6.exe: first 9.6 version
WinVile-setup-9_6m.exe: appears to be the latest 9.6 version with patches applied
[I believe the one with wide in the name has unicode support but haven't tried it.]

vile-w32.zip: latest win32 command line version - this doesn't get as much attention as the gui version

It's claim to fame is the portability between several os's, closeness to the original vi and extensive macro language. I've probably used < 2% of the macro capabilities. It's fairly compact and can be used in windows without ever touching the registry.

Thanks. I'll have a look. I especially like that part about never touching the registry. I'm partial to that kind of code/utility/application.
