Some other things might be, a) there are just way too many flights going on at once b) everyone, from the mechanics, faa, flight control ops, security checkers, etc are too used to their routines (ie, such a monotonous job), and c) the airplanes crashing are old and shouldn't have been flying in the first place.
Article in the Times yesterday said that 2 America West pilots were ordered back to the gate before takeoff and were arrested after failing sobriety tests.. one had BAC of .09 and another had .084. FAA prevents pilots from flying with a BAC of above .04.
They were charged with felony count of operating aircraft under the unfluence as well as a standard DUI.
No. There are not more planes crashing. Flying is still safer than using a car for travel. I know that seems unusual, but the loss of life is what makes plane crashes startling. My father died in a plane crash. My brother flys all the time. I fly occasionally. I would rather drive than to fly. The stats say flying is safer, but I feel safer in my car with me driving. My brother likes flying for the convenience.
