Note: Due to a pending investigation and the possibility of revealing too much information, this post will not name names and will not provide every detail.
Cliffs:
What happened?
~$120 in cash was taken from my wallet, which was in the back of the top-right drawer of my desk, likely while I was still asleep.
When did this occur?
Most likely between 9:30AM-10:00AM Tuesday, May 2nd
Alternatively, could have happened 6:00PM-9:00PM Monday or after 11:00PM that night, depending on who did it.
Where did this occur?
In my dormitory room, on the second floor.
Why did you have so much cash?
I'd just sold my guitar. Now I'm out a guitar AND the money.
Did you report this?
The theft has been reported to the RA, who has reported to the RC in charge. DUPD has been notified + police report. Fat lot of good that will do...
You're an idiot.
Thanks. I'd intended to deposit $80 cash the next day. I also am paranoid about locking doors. Unfortunately, my roommate isn't.
Dude, it's your roommate.
While I can't rule him out 100% because I can't demand he submit to a 100% search of everything he has, this is unlikely. We have been friends since the eighth grade and he has no need for my money. Also, I believe him when he says he closed the door behind him when he left Tuesday morning. I did yell at him for not locking doors with a few choice expletives, which is highly uncharacteristic of me. I stopped short of accusing him of taking my money but made it clear that I can't rule him out as a suspect, in any case.
You sure you weren't drunk/lost your money/etc?
Yes. I have never been and don't plan to ever get drunk, I don't drop money out of my wallet (impossible due to design) and I'm generally responsible and careful. I've been accused of being paranoid. Well, I wasn't paranoid enough.
Scenario 1 (9:30AM-10:00AM)
Roommate leaves room at 9:30AM to go print notes and visit library. I'm still asleep, so he closes the door behind him. I wake up at 10:00AM. The door is WIDE open (highly unusual) and something just doesn't feel right. The guy across the hall must have had his computer crash, because it was looping some kind of sound over and over at loud volume. This continued for over 15 minutes after I woke up, so I doubt anyone was inside. Around 11:00AM I get a craving for food and reach for my wallet. I'm dismayed to find that all my cash is gone, and in a panic check to make sure nothing else is missing. Only the cash is gone.
Bottom line: Either my roommate took it, or someone saw him leaving and not locking the door and took the opportunity. Could also have been one of the guys in the hall seeing him leave without locking the door. The hall door to our section was propped open, so someone could have gotten in and out without noise.
Scenario 2 (Stolen sometime the previous night)
I was at work from 6:00-9:00PM, and sleeping at 11:30PM. Between 6:00PM-9:00PM my roommate was around, but sometimes he'll run out to go to the commons or visit a friend. He doesn't ever lock the door. At some point during the night he came back, but with a paper due the following morning he apparently did not sleep much, if at all. In any case, he probably didn't keep the door locked during restroom visits/vending machine runs/etc. I left my wallet in the drawer without thinking about it.
Bottom line: My roommate had access, as well as any of the guys in the hall since he never locks the door...
Suspects:
Roommate
Hallmate #1
Hallmate #2
Hallmate #3
Hallmate #4
Hallmates #5-13 (across from our section)
Guys directly below (one has seen my wallet)
Custodial staff/maintenance (they were cleaning hall floors, bathrooms, etc.)
Random pothead or thief looking for unlocked doors (always a possibility...)
I doubt I will ever find who is responsible, and even if I were to shake down everyone a smart thief would have gotten rid of the cash already. I have since changed my habits and have implemented surveillance. I wake up earlier and my wallet is never out of arms' reach...
Lesson: Don't carry a lot of cash, and never leave your wallet out of arms' reach.
