EDIT: that whole "we have enough cash to keep from bankruptcy a year" thing didn't help. though thats probably better than many companies.

Can it go lower? Of course it can. Mind you that was my bitterness coming out, because the company I work for wishes it was at 3.63.

Mortgage your house for all it is worth, pull all your funds out of your 401k, borrow against your pension, take the money out of your children's saving accounts and invest it ALL in AMD. That is what I would do to invest in a security that has lost 3/4 of its value over the last few weeks. Hell yea.

it's going to get worse before it gets better. i would wait. they are in trouble in the desktop market, they're paper launching, posting losses, and they don't really have much on the roadmap to give hope that they'll catch back up to intel any time soon.

On Wednesday, AMD (AMD: news, chart, profile) warned that it expects to report a "substantial" operating loss on revenue of about $500 million for its third quarter ended Sept. 30. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call expected AMD to lose 49 cents a share on revenue of $614 million.

Analysts had expected a loss of 49 cents a share on revenue of $614 million, on average. In July, AMD had predicted sales of slightly more than $600 million.

According to a statement, AMD reduced processor inventory in the PC supply chain and this hurt sales and average selling prices.

"Going into the fourth quarter, AMD and its customers are in a much-improved position to take advantage of the anticipated seasonal improvement in demand," CFO Robert Rivet said in a statement.

IMO, I would wait. Right now with all the crap that is going on, I can only see chip stocks falling more. People are scared. Any bad news and they will start dumping stocks. But if you want a short term investment right now, I'd buy AMD. I'd expect it to jump up on bargain hunting.

If SOI doesn't work and Hammer cant beat Intel in performance, then it's bye bye for AMD.

I would hold off buying AMD for now simply because the price can only get lower until we get near the launch of Hammer, and that's like what now? 2H of 2003?

If your an Intel fan the last thing you want is AMD going banckrupt because they keep the cost down on Pentium 4's.

That's right, so all you Intel boys run out and buy a Duron or Athlon! You can send one to me while you're at it, if you don't have a motherboard to put it in. ;-)

Is now the time to buy it? Y'all think it could go lower?

Stocks trade for what they're worth. Contrary to what others here might say, AMD might be going the way of the dinasaur. The economy might save them, but there is a reason they are at $3 and some change.

my opinion of this item is hold/sell. It's moving no where fast, so might as well wait for some news that they are going to do better in the future. Right now, I don't see that news as anything other than specualtion.

This is a risky issue to get into right now. Consider buying a $5 dollar call (leap). maybe a $10 call (leap).

EDIT: Actually, next week, I'm going to consider buying some calls.

It's not just AMD if you been reading the news and kept informed you know very well they going to drop to this low today and took advantage of it by shorting it.
what is the cause of this?
9-11 event
fear of terrorist
alway bad news
company scandal
war with iraq
and last, bad economy that is not recovering anytime soon. people aren't spending anymore like they use to and most are alot poorer today then you realize. i see no reason to upgrade and so do the majority and the internet itself is becoming less active theseday, we going back to the old day of spending time with family, watching the news worrying about what going to happen next.
some are canceling their broadbad to cut the bills down because it not neccessary and that make sense.

Stocks trade for what they're worth.

Like when Pets.com had a market cap of over $1billion? .. If stocks traded for what they're (meaning the company) is worth, then Wallstreet wouldn't be so damn volatile, would it?

The reason is people are on the bandwagon. Little people with not much money are being coaxed to sell by the institutions that want more. AMD is a great short term play right now and an even better long term.

AMD is not going the way of the 'dinasaur'. Someone will want to buy it out with a market cap that gets much lower. (Maybe the Chinese government.)

What's Ironic about this is that it is all a result of poor management and unrealistic goals. It seems AMD got the idea that they were at the top of their game with no competitors at some point, and they started setting expensive goals. It was insanely stupid to hand out all the free processors and motherboards they did, and it was stupid to think that the Athlon would hold out against the P4 for any large period of time considering the fact that the Athlon was made to compete with the P3. AMD needs to learn that you cant always please the public with what they want at every corner in buisness, and that it's OK to be second best. Sure there will be critics, but who are they to talk? Buisness is buisness and AMD got a bit to ambitious this time around. One step at a time AMD.

I suspect the implied meaning of "worth" in the first quote was perceived, but not fundamental value (although I suspect that you could have several thousand investors look at a balance sheet and come up with differing perceptions of the fundamental value of the same company).

I have no idea what the ratio of individual to institutional investors in the stock market is, but my gut says that volatility in the stock market is caused by people with only vague knowledge of the operation of markets and a low tolerance for risk who have decided that they need to invest because they heard that people can make a lot of money doing so. The sheer number of daily posts which say "Gosh, stock X sure is getting low, I'll buy some" does very little to counter my hypothesis.
