Fuck ice cream. Gelato is where it's at. Not the store bought gelato either - find a place locally that makes it fresh and you will never go back to ice cream. Yes, ice cream and gelato are very similar, but gelato has less air and fat than ice cream and it is served at just under freezing (ice cream is kept as low as -20F whereas gelato should be closer to 10F) so it doesn't numb your tastebuds.

my all-time favourite ice-cream flavour is Licorice. We used to have a local ice-cream company (Shaws) that made it and several other flavours, too. I miss licorice ice-cream so much.

That sounds really good. I never had such a thing.

Homemade ice cream is so good that the ice cream maker should be the first thing you grab if the Empire takes over your cloud city.

Me and my wife received a White Mountain ice cream maker for a wedding present a few years ago so we just make our own.

Heyhow does it work for you? I've been looking into getting one but i read some very bad reviews about rusting, sloppy gears and all kinds of game over problems after a few uses.
I'd be interested to hear how it works for you.

So, a year old thread was bumped for "Vanilla all the way! "

At least it would have been interesting if it was "I found Hot Dog ice cream"...

Talenti Gelato is where its at.

Ice cream has so much air in it now. Someone is like... hey look at my giant tub of icecream for the same price as your tiny gelato har har har you're so stupid for buying that. Except... they are close in calories. So HMMMMMMMMM. Whose the retard. I'll take dextrose and real cream over HFCS and air anyday.

Talenti also makes sorbets (sorbetto). Their mango is excellent. They use the good Alphonso mangos which you usually don't get except in the authentic Indian ice creams. I'm a vegan, so I usually get that or coconut milk or soy milk based frozen desserts (better than you would think, especially chocolate ones) when I miss ice cream.

I don't eat ice cream anymore, but when I was a kid chocolate malted crunch from a store in California called Thrifty was pretty damn good!

Yeah, Thrifty Drug which at one point used the ice cream as a loss leader to get people into the store. Rite Aid bought them out a little while ago ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thrifty_PayLess )but you can still get the ice cream at those stores. There's one about a mile away from me, I should try their ice cream again.

I can't believe people love Coldstone so much though. It's basically some artificially flavored ice cream with a lot of toppings mixed it. Baskin Robbins has a ton of flavors as well, but I'd say their actual ice cream is a bit better. My friends hyped up Coldstone's cake batter ice cream, but it just tastes artificial and I ate it thinking about how they got it to taste somewhat like cake batter.

Perhaps I'm lucky, I have local creameries and dairy bars near me, that most of them serve "homemade" ice cream.

But hey, there's always the Haagen-Daz on sale at CVS too. Pineapple-Coconut, Honey, PB+Choc, etc. Plus classic Strawberry, never gets old.

You know, just a normal day. Hot outside, hot in work, air conditioning is insufficient, you're sweating like a pig, so after work you'll go outside to fetch a scoop of a good ol' ice cream. I hate that crap that most shops sale in big packages - too sugary, too artificial, not enough ice cream in it if any. (I am this demanding since I was in Italy for a month and tasted REAL ice cream)
What is even more strange, I simply couldn't find any classic lemon ice cream, all of these shops or stands had something that has hardly any decent taste and flavours are just crazy as well. My friend recommended me this ice cream shop, but even the description discourages me:

"Favourites like roasted marshmallow, lemon meringue, coffee toffee, and banana chocolate chip are what keep the customers coming back. Greg's also offers flavours like star anise, cardamom, sweet cream, stout, and strawberry yogurt. All the varieties are creamy and bursting with rich taste. When you sample the roasted marshmallow flavour, you spend most of your time wondering, “How does it taste so much like roasted marshmallows?”"

Roasted marshmallows? Seriously? Is there a hot dog ice cream too? I mean, I know that I might sound like a hater, but all I want is a decent "oldschool" ice cream, because I think that these "enhancements" are trying to change something that was perfected long time ago in Europe.

So what's your opinion on these ice creams? Which one do you prefer? Am I the only one who cares for the good ol' lemon, apple or hazelnut flavour? And do you have any tips for a good ice cream in Toronto or perhaps a good brand that I'd be able to buy in walmart, loblaws etc.. ?
P.S.: yeah I am becoming pretty much grumpy.
I seriously doubt you know what you are talking about!
If you really were in Italy then you probably had Gelatio ....

Gelato (Italian pronunciation: [dʒeˈlaːto]; plural: gelati) is the Italian word for ice cream, derived from the Latin word "gelātus" (meaning frozen). In American English this word commonly refers to varieties of ice cream made in a traditional Italian style. Gelato is made with milk, cream, various sugars, and flavoring such as fresh fruit and nut purees. It is generally lower in calories, fat and sugar than ice cream.[1]

Gelato is a type of soft ice cream containing a relatively small amount of air.[2] By statute, gelato in Italy must have at least 3.5% butterfat, with no upper limit established.

The sugar content in homemade gelato, as in traditional ice cream, is balanced with the water content to act as an anti-freeze to prevent it from freezing solid. Types of sugar used include sucrose, dextrose, and inverted sugar to control apparent sweetness. Typically, gelato—like any other ice cream—needs a stabilizing base. Egg yolks are used in yellow custard-based gelato flavors, including zabaione and creme caramel, and non-fat milk solids are also added to gelato to stabilize the base. Starches and gums, especially corn starch, are sometimes also used to thicken and stabilize the mix.

In the United States there is no standard of definition for gelato set forth by the United States Food and Drug Administration, as there is for ice cream.[3] Whereas ice cream in the U.S. is defined by the Federal Code both by its ingredients, which includes milk fat (also known as butterfat) of 10% or more, gelato in the U.S. covers a wide range of products including frozen desserts eaten like ice cream; products that are identical to ice cream with the exception of their butterfat contents; and premium ice cream containing butterfat far exceeding the minimums set forth in Italy.

What if they made a Jack Daniels ice cream flavor? LOL! Baskin Robbins has Daiquiri.

I know that the JD steak sauce is damn good!
