What The Hell Just Happened To Hotmail?!?!?!?!

(This is a copy from my post off another site but I'm so irate ATM I had to spread it around. Don't even know if this is the right forum but I hope someone understands/appreciates my sentiments.)

I come home from a long day of work and log into my account to find what might as well have been a black screen with giant middle finger on it. What gives? It's no longer hotmail, it's Windows Live! F-you longtime user!

I can forgive that it's really, REALLY ugly. It will take time to get used to, but OK. These things happens. Some moron at Microsoft thought "Hey, change is good, even if it's really NOT!"

So like any well adjusted geek, the first email I click on is the NewEgg deals newsletter (from promo@email.newegg.com). There are big grey boxes where pictures should be. Odd. I've received dozens, maybe hundreds of these and never have there been big grey boxes instead of pictures. I look for an explanation, and I see a dainty little exclaimation mark next to the phrase "You may not know this sender."

Oh really? After letting dozens of emails from this sender litter my inbox, I may NOT know this sender?! Who the hell are you talking to you mutant, hillbilly cousin of hotmail? Oh well, this program is new and stupid, I'll point it in the right direction. I click "Mark as safe" and it refreshes, responding "You've just added this sender to your safe senders list." Ok now that's out of the way- WAIT! Where are my pictures? Still grey boxes dominate my screen. Just to make sure it registered, I reload the inbox and click the email again. Surprise! Nothing has changed! And it still says I may not know the sender, even though I just clicked that I did! Smart!

Again, I look for an explanation of why I'm not seeing the pictures I now realize I've taken for granted all this time. I see a highlighted bar saying "Attachments, pictures and links have been blocked for your safety." My safety? Am I two years old? What the hell is something in webmail going to do to me - reach out and tear off my testicles?! And didn't I just add this to my safe senders list? What good is a safe senders list if you aren't going to assume what they send me is safe?!?!

I click the "Show content" link next to the highlighted bar and sure enough, now I see my pictures. Apparently, I will need to repeat this process for almost EVERY SINGLE EMAIL I receive, save for buddies just saying "Hi," except if they are nice enough to think I'd enjoy a link or a funny picture, and then of course I would have to repeat this mind-bogglingly stupid exercise. And then I realize: my days of being comforted by the familiar face and function of the first, best webmail program are gone forever.

And what is it all for anyways? 4 more GB? I didn't even used a quarter of that 1GB they graciously upgraded me to some recent time ago.

So here's to you Microsoft. Create something great, gain a following, and in one single day piss it all away. Good job guys.

And hello GMail.

-Happy user of Hotmail for over 10 years as far as I can guess... until today

(PS: Does anyone know how to batch forward 5200 emails to a gmail account?

PPS: And if anyone knows someone who works at MS, first kick them in the genitals, and then have them explain what the hell they were thinking when they shat this disaster upon the internet.)

Pretty weak rant considering you were getting it for free, no?

Hotmail is so spammer and/or 2000, BTW.

Free with ads...

As far as it being dated, that was also kind of my point. I've been using this program since I was in junior high, back when it was the best thing around. Forgive me for being loyal.

Oh well, guess it's time to move on. GMail or is there something better?

And BTW, nice job on making a 24yo feel ancient.

My hotmail works fine

More than adequate for my personal needs, i get zero spam, and i can remember my password/username

Haven't noticed the pic blocking thing, but then all that stuff goes through my work email, so...

The newsletter i get from the Western Force (State Rugby team) shows up fine tho.

Why not? I signed up a very long time ago, my account doesn't get spammed, i can access it anywhere, and if you wanted 11tybillion GB of storage, i believe it now offers more than gmail...

Of course, it's not as cool as gmail, but nobody over the age of 15 and out of their mum's basement is likely to notice or care.

Ohsnap, GMail doesn't display images by default either!
Better quit using GMail or Hotmail.

Remotely-served images are also used by spammers to see if you actually open the email and therefore if the accont is "live".

Seriously. I bet he's one of those countless masses who think their pc is perfectly safe, while in reality it is packed full of trojans/spyware/viruses.

It sounds to me like the new hotmail has increased their security, which can only be good.

If I could create folders with gmail, it might. So far, I like the new yahoo email much more.

This is really my only complaint about Gmail, but it's still what I use for my personal mail.

I wish they'd just enable this function, I'm sure there are tons of people out there that'd like it also.

I have all kinds of folders in my gmail....been using it exclusively for ~3yrs. Access it from anywhere. Maybe you just need to splash around in it for awhile.

Have you used the gmail label system? With rules + labels you basically have folders, but the interface is much more powerful than just a traditional folders system. Each email can have multiple labels assigned to it, so essentially you can store it in multiple 'folders'. It's difficult to explain, but after using labels I would never want to go back to folders.

One issue I've seen with the label system that I haven't found a work around to is that if you say label an email from bob@gmail.com that's fine and dandy I can filter all messages with that label that I've marked, but if I want all present and future message from bob@gmail.com to have that same label, I'd have to "stamp" that label on to each and every individual message from that address rather than having some automated method to do this.

I haven't spent more than a few mins messing around with this but haven't seen a way to do this so far.

Edit: I should note that I realize you can apply labels to message but it still keeps those messages in the root of the inbox and does not move them out of it.

This is a bit problematic for business vs personal use in a inbox. I wan to have the ability to seperate totally my say family and friends messages from business or professional messages, yet with the labels I do not see any way to do so.

Just a preference though but the labels do work well for their purpose, just not the same as a folder system.
