What happened is that the two guys and a group of about 18 others entered the comedy club while Richards was speaking. They were coming there for a friend's birthday, taking him out. There was a mixed group of people. Blacks, whites, asians that were coming in. They sat down, started ordering their drinks, and Richards got pissed b/c of the ruckous. He then said "Ahh, the blacks and mexicans are coming in." Then he said something along the lines of "Look at that ni**er" and everyone was just shocked. Then he started going off some more, and that's what a member of the group stood up and said "You're not funny." One of the guys in the group then (one that was on the Today Show) then repeated "You're not funny" and that's when it all starts.

But here's the kicker :|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|

They've hired Gloria Alred? and they are going to try to sue him to get money!!! OMG!!??? WTF???? :!:!:!:!
honestly, how can you believe a word these people said? not defending Richards, but if these people are going to sue him i would think they are shooting for the most outrageous story that they can.

hopefully, they sue and lose. this isn't about money. it's about an apology, remorse, and forgiveness from the other side.

also, they sure are making themselves out to be totally innocent in all of this. so Richards went off on them for just coming in late and sitting down? i thought he had been heckled, and i do realize heckling still would be no excuse for what went down.

Suing?! Please... I think what he said was horrible, and should do something for his own restitution, like donate a large sum of money to the NAACP, to show he's got character. But how can you sue someone for saying offensive things? I hope this is a rumor. A lawyer should be the first to remember the First Amendment. I don't like being offended either, but I wouldn't sue someone for hurting my feelings.

This just in, the guys that heckled him are suing.

They're live on Fox News right now.

bleh.

Edit: Gist of the interview.
Two guys hire high-profile lawyer. They dance around questions about when they decided to sue and what dollar amount they want as damages.

According to them, they just want whatever the "retired judge" thinks is fair and that Michael Richards should be punished.

O give me a break dude.

They were on the Today show, and they gave their story totally eloquently on national television.

If thats the truth, I think Richards should at least pay for the tickets of their group which was a mix of Black and Asians and a few whites.

I hope you aren't one of those asian dudes who love sucking up to white dudes, cause thats really annoying (coming from a white dude)

Yeah, I really didn't quite get the point of that statement.

Anyway, I was trying to inform people that they were being grilled by some guys on Fox News. I found it interesting that they'd take the stance of "We'll take whatever the judge thinks is fair" rather than "I feel we need a public apology to our faces." It's as if they're hoping to get some money out of this, but that's just me.

They said "I feel we need a public apology to our faces." on the Today show. Richards failed to do so and failed to show up and instead went on the Letterman show.

Fox News will grill any minority or liberal to the death to get different answers.

Please. Watch some real news.

Can anyone tell me why the N word is the holy grail of racial slurs while racial slurs pertaining to asians, whites, hispanics, etc are pushovers? When someone says the N word people react as if someone just died, but the same cannot be said for racial slurs towards other races.

He said they would be lynched if they talked like that to a white man in the past.

I think if any race said that too any other race its pretty disgusting.

Its also especially funny because Michael Richards is Jewish.

I'm not talking about the whole Kramer deal. I'm talking about the N word in general. Why is the N word a million times worst than any other racial slur?

EDIT: IMO the reason why I think the N word is still around or even exist is because black people use this word quite often, even though they dont use it as an insult. I think it would just be a better idea if no one used it at all, black or not.

I agree but I think it would still be used in the south or midwest or other uneducated areas of America.

It is true that rap does promote it, but that doesn't mean everyone has to follow the example of a few uneducated people.

Michael Richards was born in Culver City, California, to William Richards, an electrical engineer, and Phyllis (nee Nardozzi), a medical records librarian. Richards was raised in the Catholic religion. He attended the California Institute of the Arts but received a BA degree in drama from The Evergreen State College in 1975. He also had a short-lived Improv act with Ed Begley, Jr. during this period. Enrolled at Los Angeles Valley College, he continued to dominate student productions. He later said, "I am grateful that the public schools introduced me to the performing arts." He was drafted during the Vietnam War and stationed in Germany as one of the co-directors of the V Corps Training Road Show. He produced and directed shows dealing with race relations and drug abuse; "This was a successful, educational operation, boosting the morale of our men and incorporating the arts into the service." He then spent two years in the Army developing educational skits and a couple more years "finding himself" at a commune in the Santa Clara Mountains; he drove a bus and developed a stand-up comedy act in 1979.

ah, i guess i was wrong about him not used to hecklers.

YouTube has the Fox interview. The two guys interviewing the *plaintiffs" are pretty stupid in their questioning. I wanted them to ask if they'd consider some sort of apology and public service as proper punishment instead of giving 60% to Allred and singing the blues about how their feelings were hurt.

It's sad when people here try to mitigate this racial outburst. It's even worse when Blacks try to placate whites and start having sympathy for the racist, getting angry that the victims are hiring Gloria Alred and trying to divert the topic to what's appropriate to call whom.

Michael Richards is obviously racist anyway you look at it and that act that he performed on Letterman was nothing more than preaching to the congregation. Now the congregation sympathizes more with the aggressor than the victim.

Let's look at it two ways: IF Richards was correct and the individuals were heckling him, his vengeance quickly got out of hand and his true feeling were coming out. By the time he realized it (on stage) it was too late and he went into a sort of "sad role", which he's been ever since.
IF the individuals are correct than he is an outright racist who deserves no sympathy, except for the closeted racists and self-hating blacks on this board and around the country. If I can see right through his act, the only reason why others can't is simply because they don't want to.

As for people here wondering about the double-standard of the N-word, do a little history reasearch and you'll find two things. The first is that people of African descent have suffered greatly at the hands of Europeans and their descendents since the 1500s. The second thing is that individuals withing a community who shared a painful past get around some of that pain by making light of it. Nevertheless, individuals outside that community should not see it as an invitation. Hence, the double standard.

******, which was originally directed at the Irish, was re-directed against Blacks because of its proximity to Negro. What's odd is that before the 1500s, being black was one of the highest honors in the world, probably because most knowledge came from Africa and India and traveled to the rest of the world. Today, it's a byword for weakness, intellectual inferiority and so on. Perhaps it's a mother complex.

As for Mel Gibson, whether he is or isn't a racist, one has to remember that he endured over a year of attacks because of POTC. Stuff like that goes into your psyche and it eventually bubbled up when he was drunk.

Wow, people are just retarded. The guys in the group are full of s***, they started heckling him back, there's your incentive right there. Was Richards right in flinging racial slurs at them, no. However, if they had any guts they would give it right back, meet him outside the club, beat the crap out of him, and call it a night. Instead, they go on TV, want to sue him, etc and be a bunch of melodramatic money-grubbing scum like so many others are (e.g. parents who sued Michael Jackson, etc.). The worst part about it is everyone is trying to get in on the deal with interviews, reports, lawyers getting cases, etc. etc. Modern society disgusts me: instead of taking care of the problem short and sweet they're a bunch of pansies turning this into a high school drama.

Being a big guy, 6'1" 235, I thought I was somewhat safe sitting in the front row at Yuk Yuk's comedy club a few months back. But still, two different comedians noticed me and tossed a few jokes my way at my expense. It was all in fun though.

That's such crap. The Jews were persecuted for centuries and nearly wiped out, but do you really think that we call each other beloved patriot as a result? No other ethnic group has resorted to calling themselves a racial epithet in order to communicate with each other. I'm not sure why the black culture started doing so, but it doesn't make much sense to me.

As for Mel Gibson, his father is an anti-Semite. I'm not surprised he is as well.
