I completely agree. Except why does the color even matter?

Actually, I was just thinking that myself, but we aren't THAT advanced in society to get beyond that. This ain't Star Trek
I was thinking of Star Trek too. Especially that one episode where the people were black on one side and white on the other. They looked the same to Kirk but they were black and white on different sides and that was the basis for the hate. Deep stuff, lol.

Ummm...if I remember correctly if you wear a red shirt, you get killed. So who says color doesn't matter in Star Trek?

You know what? With the sincere apology he displayed, he is still a dumba$$ at the highest level. He may or may not be a true racist, but he purposely attempted to knock those hecklers down so deep in their core with total disregard for others who were in that audience.

It was a vicious attack, much worse than if he flipped out and beat them with his hands. After all, he did not attack them as individuals, he attacked their families, their history, everything. He simply is on a high horse and was outraged by someone he considered so under him, how dare they judge him on stage.
I'm not buying it!

I agree Dean. He went after them viciously and now he is apologizing because he has to. I wonder if he was impaired in anyway.

I think most know what it is. I think many here just had so much respect and liked the guy, they are having a hard time seeing the obvious. I liked the guy too, until I saw his blind hatred.

I said in another post in P&N that I think everyone is a bigot, just on vastly different levels. Everyone will have some sort of intolerance to someone who is of different religion, ethnic backgrounds, lifestyle, creed or color. The battle we have in life is to overcome our inner fears, to accept difference and to better ourselves. If he came on Letterman last night and said look, I am a racist, I also promise to try to make myself a better human being. I would have taken what he said at face value and said good luck to him. That would have taken real courage and would have shown that he realizes his inner demons and wants to correct them. As it stands, he does not consider himself to be racist . I consider him not only a racist, but also a liar. All he will do now is sweep the obvious under a rug.

Just because he said that to one person doesn't makes him a racist. Did you get this up-in-arms when Beyonce's comments? Pretty much every hugely popular black comedian uses the words beloved patriot or cracker, that's ok though?

You need to settle down. He made one comment to one person and you act like he was burning crosses on Oprah's lawn.
That was well said.

So true.
I still use the words black (man, guy) and white, am I going to get in trouble for using it? Also, if a white kid calls his white friend "his ******" (sign of affection), is he going to get in trouble? I've seen it tons of times and know lots of white kids that do this. I thought there is a huge step calling someone a black (normal) and a N-R (a certain kind of person, black or white).

You need to settle down. He made one comment to one person and you act like he was burning crosses on Oprah's lawn.

Exscuse me for adding in my 2 cents, but in this instance his comments were more general , in essence they didn't refer to one person but to more or less a whole group of people. And I feel that for anyone to make such comments whether black, white, orange, or purple is wrong. BTW what comments did Beyonce make?

My take on the video is this. At first he seems like he might be joking even though comments such as " Shut up! 50 years ago we'd have you upside down with a f***ing pitchfork up your a**" are disturbing, and when he said "Throw his a** out, He's a N*, He's a N, He's a N" My take on it was at first maybe he's doing satire on racisim. When he said "Alright you see? This shocks you, it shocks you..." that would have reinforced my thought that it was satire. But when he says "They're going to arrest me for calling a black man a N" (in a sarcastic tone) and "That's what happens when you interrupt the white man, don't you know?" That proves he's serious and he has a serious problem.

It's like he's saying that if a black man does something you don't like he shall be punished because that's what happens when you mess with the white man.

On the other hand I do feel the man he was arguing with should have said"That was uncalled for you f***ing c***er-a** motherf***er" or a "F***ing white boy" that was just as bad he should have been the better person and not used racial slurs nor should he have been obnoxious in the first place. Although that does not mean he should have been called racial slurs. The correct way for Michael Richards to handle this would have been to talk to the manager and have security remove the offending person.

As long as we fall back on the ignorance exspressed in the pas 100+ years we will never advance to becoming better people. I feel saddend that two adults have to result to such derogatory racial comments.

P.S( I understand some of your views on saying black or white person but the issue with that is when have you ever seen anyone who is truly white or black? and what about other races, not everyone who has dark skin is black or of african descent(I don't feel that's what most of you intended to say I'm just making a point for clarity), there are so many shades in the rainbow of people.)

LOL. Makes sense. Maybe you can tell me, do many blacks feel that way and are just scared to say so?

It's exactly the same as people referring to white people as Caucasians.

I don't know. When I'm around my family, we say black. We don't say African American. In fact, the only people that seem to say African American are people in politics/news or people that think that it is the politically correct thing to say African American rather than get chastised for saying black.

Maybe they should change it to Brown and Beige.

Or Chocolate and Vanilla.

People would feel more comfortable using it.

his apology was complete Bullsh!t. He didn't accidentally say the N word, he's not sorry he said it, he's sorry people are mad he said it. It kills me how he can go on Letterman and look sad and say "I'm sorry" I don't care how mad he was at the hecklers, he used the one of the most hateful words in the world. And I'm supposed to believe that almost overnight he all of a sudden understands what he said was wrong? And to all the people on here who are even trying to compare this to a black comedian calling a white person beloved patriot or Cracker. That's not ok either, but what Richards did is a million times worse.

look at this book on Amazon

this is what the N word is about...

the history behind the N word is deeper then any insult a black comedian could ever throw at a white person. How many whites were lynched by black people while being called a Cracker? I'm sure it's happened, but it's probably 1 for every 2,000 the other way.

Richards said what was on his mind, the N word might have been a huge slip up, but it's exactly what he was thinking. He's a Racist and I have no respect for him. As mad as I've gotten at people of color, I've never for a second came close to using the N word. there is no excuse.

I cant beleive that people are still discussing this discusting event!!! You would think that after being discussed for so long people would be discussed by the whole thing.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The two guys that were the target of the attacks are on The Today Show. According to them, this was just the tip of the iceberg and he said more before the tape started. He called them the N-word before the tape even starts rolling.

What happened is that the two guys and a group of about 18 others entered the comedy club while Richards was speaking. They were coming there for a friend's birthday, taking him out. There was a mixed group of people. Blacks, whites, asians that were coming in. They sat down, started ordering their drinks, and Richards got pissed b/c of the ruckous. He then said "Ahh, the blacks and mexicans are coming in." Then he said something along the lines of "Look at that ni**er" and everyone was just shocked. Then he started going off some more, and that's what a member of the group stood up and said "You're not funny." One of the guys in the group then (one that was on the Today Show) then repeated "You're not funny" and that's when it all starts.

But here's the kicker :|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|

They've hired Gloria Alred? and they are going to try to sue him to get money!!! OMG!!??? WTF???? :!:!:!:!

I hadn't watched the video because I've been busy the last few days, but I saw this thread sticking around so I decided to give it a go. Wow, that was way worse than I thought it would be. I'm surprised the K-man didn't get his ass whooped.

I've been to comedy shows before, and comedians of all colors use racist jokes. Often times a comedian will inch closer and closer to "the line" of what's appropriate and what's not, gauging how the audience reacts. A good comedian will backtrack as soon as the line is crossed.

Now I've watched segments of Richard's infamous act, and either he's too oblivious to evaluate the audience and know when he's gone too far, he went temporarily insane, or he's just a closet bigot who lost control. The bit went way, WAY over the line, and I can't understand why Richards continued to fuel the fire. His Letterman segment was painfully awkward to watch; he seemed almost shell-shocked. That's not the type of situation where you can just say "I'm sorry" and hope everyone forgives and forgets. Frankly, I'm not sure how or if he atones for this incident.
