I was in gas pain all day yesterday and woke up with it again this morning. I am thinking WTF this is really bizarre. I took 4 dimethicone (OTC gas-X) that did absolutely nothing. This morning I remembered how Ginger supposed to work for digistive problems. I took 1/4 teaspoon, and 30 minutes later the pain is TOTALLY and COMPLETELY gone...

I was just thinking how often this probably happens - perfectly effective herbal remedies are shunned aside because they are not profitable...And a huge moral dilemma for someone who wants to be a physician's assistant. Then again, since anything I do will probably involve profit/loss I guess I will be forced to do something that makes me feel like an A-hole...

But yeah, Ginger vs Drugs = Ginger 1st round KO

I almost enrolled in a graduate program thats focused on studying these natural remedies...soon they're going to make a very big comeback.

as a whole, herbal remedies decent are can be an adjunct in the treatment in many diseases. things you need to watch out for:

a) poor quality control and inconsistent ingredients...this stuff ain't regulated by the FDA people.
b) NOT everything natural is good for you people!! somehow this is a common, yet stupid misconception.
c) side effects! many will increase bleeding, some like st. john's wort interacts with anesthetics.
d) most importantly, interactions with current drugs you are taking.

luckily most they are usually so low dose that it doesn't affect anything, but i hate it when i take one of my patients to surgery and they neglect to tell me they've been taking gingko or ginseng, which increases bleeding and interacts with anti-clotting medications.

and my opinion of GNC? hocking a bunch of cheap crap at overinflated prices, under the guise of everything being 'natural'. see (b).

Herbal remedies that actually do something are good. Unfortunately many people who are into that stuff fall prey to New Age guru charlatans with a bunch of bogus medicines.

that's why chiropractic is making a big surge to the forefront of pain management and improvement/maintenance of overall health... because people are getting sick and tired of the allopathic "real doctor" model of healthcare failing them and costing them.
