What to ask for Christmas?

I'm really a bit of a stick in the mud when it comes to Christmas, refusing gifts from anyone since i was 16 years old (I'd still give gifts, I just didn't want to receive any). My parents are both retired and I can afford my own stuff, so it seemed silly.

The new wife, on the other hand, is huge on Christmas (as is her family), so I'm bowing down to their request and am now writing my first Christmas list in a decade...

What should I ask for? What's the new, cool thing out there? I'm so out of the loop when it comes to these things.

Has their finally been some improvements in set top media devices? I'd love one device that plays xvid/divx/ etc. while also playing Netflix videos - does that exist yet? I think an xbox or a ps3 would be the best option for that, right? Thoughts?

What else do the normals ask for?

I don't think the roku box will stream xvids. You can get an Xbox 360 and that will stream xvid plus Netflix.

You can get an Xbox 360 Arcade for $199 or less (check Hot Deals forum for deals) and then get a 20GB HDD for $20 through a program at MS. link

Christmas lists are for kids. If the person buying you the gift doesn't know you well enough to pick something out that you would want and like, then they shouldn't be buying you a gift.

I agree, but I didn't request it, my wife requested it to give to her parents...

I feel silly about the whole thing to, it's just how they do things. And they live on opposite coasts and, while I do love and respect them, I've maybe seen them 6 times and they don't really know my likes and dislikes (well, in things other than food).

Hmm, any chance the ps3 will get netflix streaming? Right now blu ray + basic media streaming is pretty appealing, aside from the lack of netflix.

I always buy myself what I really want, and wrap it up and tag it to me from me. That way I always get what I want. Then I just act surprised when I open the box and ask who was the awesome person that got me whatever it is. Last year it was a dell 3007wfp. This year it will be a pair of 4870x2's to crossfire.

We probably won't see official Netflix streaming on the PS3 like the 360 is getting. But, you can use PlayOn to stream Netflix to your PS3.

Does playon on a PS3 work pretty seemlessly? It's torture getting it to work on my directv (upnp media streamer), requiring reset after reset.

My family usually makes a wish list on amazon so we can coordinate. This year mind consists mostly of Blue ray movies, MP3 player, PS3 controller, gun cleaning kit, few PS3 games. I prefer a lot of smaller gifts rather than a few big ones. I buy the big ones myself.

Edit: heh, that gun cleaning kit looks a bit odd, but I shoot trap and have been neglecting my poor over-under.

I believe it works better on the PS3 than on the DirecTV receivers. I think it working on the DirecTV receivers was kind of a happy accident.

My family only made Christmas lists until my brothers and I figured out Santa doesn't exist. Since then we just tell our parents what we want - it's a bit easier that way. There are always little surprises, though. But our parents know that we know what we want, so they just ask us about the big presents.

We still make Christmas lists because my parents request it for both the kids and the grandkids.

my grandma makes me weird things like trivets, potholders and dish scrubbies. has been since i moved out of the house.

i dont make lists at all, but my kids always ask me what i want, so i give them a ton of "yeah, right" stuff to ask the grandparents to help them get me. one year i said harley, they got me a collectible model of a harley. was pretty cool.

as for your list, if you really want to make one, keep it simple and just list some things that reflect on things you enjoy. really, your new wifey should know you well enough to give them decent ideas of what you like. if that doesnt work, stuff for the home or garage always goes over well.
