Goibg to Waikiki, Oahu for a conference in may. Will be there for about 9-10 days. I've never been there, anything to do? Thinking of skipping out on a lot of the conference so island hopping is in. However, I have no idea what's worth doing and what isn't. As an aside, I SCUBA. Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

Get out of Waikiki would be the first thing

If you like hiking, do the Wa'ahila Ridge trail (Mount Olympus). It has a great view of that side of the island from certain areas. If you don't like Hiking go for a drive up Tantalus (back of UH Manoa).

Check out south shore, and the light house at Makapu'u Lighthouse. Then drive over the Pali, and stop at the Pali Lookout and back into Waikiki. That should take about half a day if you hike up the the light house and check it out. There is also a hike up to the pillboxes near Mid Pacific country club(Ka'Iwa Ridge Trail) that has amazing views.

Route looks like this, with the splotches on places I suggested stopping.

Have dinner here if you are taking your wife/gf http://www.halekulani.com/dining/ If you are going by your self, have a drink at their bar.

Oh, if there was only some way for a person to find out what kinds of activities and tourist things were available at a destination...

O'ahu is a wasteland of nothingness. There's not anything worthy of even leaving your hotel room.

Just attend the conference then retire to your room...and spare yourself the agony of being in one of the most un-fun places on the planet...

On a side note, the main problem with people having conferences and shit there is because people do exactly what you want to do.....skip them and tour the islands. I am surprised there is even anything being held at the convention center.

Rent a convertible and drive the island. Make sure you take the H3 east out of Honolulu and through the tunnel the change in weather will blow your mind.

The north shore at sunset is rather awesome as is the sunset on the west side of the island. But be careful where you go since non-natives may not be welcome in a lot of places, stick to tourist areas if you hit the west side of the island.

Not sure about scuba on Oahu, but head over to Maui for some amazing scuba there. If you hit Maui head to the top of Haleakalā and watch the sunrise, pretty amazing site.

If you bike you can also take a bike ride/tour down from the top of Haleakalā. Something like 30 miles all down hill, easy ride and interesting scenery.

Maui is pretty amazing, go there if you can swing it.

Maybe he is saying that Maui and Kona are better Oahu?

Maui and Kona both have more of a small tourist area feel than Oahu which feels like a crowded city most of the time.

Personally, I'd rather have the small town feel than the big city one.

for real, if you can't have fun in oahu you're doing it wrong. i've been there countless times and it's always been a pleasure, even when sleeping on the floor of my brother's roach infested apt.

Kikoman, Kikoman.

there are plenty of "small town" things to do on oahu...and many of them don't involve tourists. while maui and kona are great, they are also way over infested with tourists. in fact, the hawaii tourism agency just released their findings from last fall and they reported more tourists go to Maui and Kona side resorts than Oahu anymore. Their airports can handle international flights and flights from the mainland, so no sense landing in Honolulu and then flying over. if you are trying to avoid tourists, you are doing it wrong by going to Maui or Kona. Try Kauai or Molokai...or Hilo side.

It is a way for the conference-holders to make their money on attendance fees without having to put on much and for the attendees to have a vacation they can write-off.

Win-win.

Heh, I was going to suggest the same thing and I'm far from an expert on Oahu. Waikiki feels just like Southern California to me. I'd suggest renting a car and going to the other sides of the island to get away from the strip malls and tourons. I'm particularly fond of Kailua Beach, personally.

Kailua beach is alright if you are a tourist trying to avoid tourists . The water can get kinda slimy down there too depending on the rains. It is a nice beach, but a little down the way at Kalama's is just as good and only 5 minutes of a drive. A little less crowded too.

and yeah, Waikiki is totally not cool anymore unless you are going to bars at night. Otherwise its flooded with the shopping tourists, and tacky souvenir shops.

We're staying at the Barking Sands cabins north of Kekaha on Kauai in August. Really looking forward to a change of pace from Oahu.

ever go snorkeling in kailua though? i've seen some pretty cool stuff. they have some strange coral formations that look like brains. tons of turtles and moray eels and other cool stuff

can also rent a kayak and go out to those little molokini islands. very fun times!

I grew up in Hawaii and surfed in Kailua for as long as i've been alive, the coral is better to snorkle in Waikiki. Kayak rentals are the only thing I would really recommend doing, and you can just call them the "mokes".

wow ... Hanauma Bay looks AMAZING!

never been to Oahu but went to Maui, and I loved how I could snorkel just off the shore in quite a few areas and see tons of stuff.
