Salem is the armpit of Oregon. There's not much to do there, except that the State Fair is this weekend (and it's a good one if you enjoy that kind of thing). Or, if you like hiking, there's always Silver Falls State Park. Good road trips out of Salem are Detroit Lake in the Cascade Mts. to the east, or head west to Lincoln City/Depoe Bay/Newport on the Pacific coast to the west.
OTOH, there's so much to do in Portland -- the crown jewel of Oregon -- that I don't even know where to begin.
Beware going to the North Oregon Coast or to Mt. Hood this weekend though. They're running the Hood to Coast relay. Highways in those areas will be either packed or closed.

California is so much nicer. There are way too many tree hugging hippies in Oregon.

Holy crap you mentioned Depoe Bay where I live and if you blink you will miss it. We have one traffic light and it is awesome. It has a green and yellow and red light!
Seriously the coast here is beautiful and there are some good beaches and park areas however if you come to the coast don't expect any nudie bars.

Well, technically I think you can have two armpits without conflict.Originally posted by: adairusmc

Wrong. Burns is the armpit of Oregon.
