What to do in Orlando?

I have a couple of questions for people who live in Orlando or have visited recently.

I scheduled a conference in Orlando this March. I haven't been in about 12 years, and I'd like to get some recommendations on extra-curricular activities.

I will have evenings free for a week and am contemplating flying in early Sunday and spending the day around town before the conference.

I have been to Disney and not likely to go again due to lack of time and family is staying at home for this trip. All other suggestions welcome, though!

I'll stay at the conference hotel and don't anticipate renting a car. Does Orlando have good transportation, or am I looking at taxis to get around?

Public transportation in Orlando sucks. We are hopefully going to get a train system (SunRail) in the next few years, but for now you are stuck with the bus or taxis. I would rent a car.

What part of town will you be on? Disney/I-Drive area? Downtown? Eastside (by UCF)?

Nope. Disney offers shuttle bus service to its hotels, but there is no rail out of the airport.

maybe somebody in Orlando has thought about this.

Interesting. Their website says I can take Link 111 route, and transfer at Disney West Side Transfer Center to Downtown Disney Superstop, to the hotel.

Edit: oops sorry it is a bus, but at least it gets me there.

get a car, seriously. and if you like to eat, there's a bunch of places on i-drive, granted touristy, but at least something to do.

Gator land is pretty weak. There are a fair amount of gators and you get to see them eat food occasionally, but it is incredibly overpriced.

As long as you make it back out of Orlando without getting your car broken into during the day you can call it a success.

Bad experience? It's pretty safe here, especially in the touristy areas.
