So I ordered a Samsung 840 Pro 512 GB SSD and was wondering what is the best practice when I get it:

Shall I replace it with my current Liteon LAT-M256MS and install Windows fresh and partition it using the Windows manager?

Or is it better to keep my current OS, install the Samsung Partition software that comes with it, and let it do the magic?

But if i'm gonna do the 2nd way, will the Samsung software allow me to partition the drive and do the over provisioning for me automatically even if the drive wasn't physically in the laptop and rather connected via USB?

Does it come with a USB drive enclosure like the Kingstons do or not/ I have one anyway from my older Kingston SSD but was just wondering

kthxbye :whiste:

I would install the new Samsung, then re-install windows fresh, and let it do the partitioning, etc.
I'm not a fan of copying old install's onto new drives, but it's upto you, also no need to over provision.

oh i will do a clean install either ways but I thought is it better to do the over provisionning using Samsung's utility first in Windows?

why do you say no need to do it? isn't this what's all the Samsung Magician about?

I do not use the Sansung Magician at all.
But it's a new toy so, get it, install it, and play with it.
After you bench it (10 to 50 times) then you can decide what to do with it.

I think the Samsung drive cloning software is by Acronis. I've used the Acronis-labeled Clone utility in the past with no problems.

If you have plenty of room on the drive, you might not run out of the workspace the drive controller needs to do its thing, but on the other hand if you have plenty of space, why not over-provision? I use it on my 840 Pro, only because Samsung recommends it. Other people think it's a waste of space.

The disk cloning software worked flawlessly for me. I don't think a fresh install is necessary.
